Smokey Bear Reading Challenge Winners

The Smokey Bear Reading Challenge is was held in cooperation with the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County. Participants returning their completed challenge form to any branch were entered to win one of 3 prize packs for 0-5 years, 6-11 years and 12+ years age groups sponsored by the Garrett County Forestry Board! Smokey Bear also made appearances at the Grantsville and Oakland branches with staff from the MD Forest Service to visit with youth and teach them about wildfire prevention. The winners are:
0-5 age group: Harley Divelbliss
6-11 age group: Hosanna Apawue
12+ age group: Lydia Sgaggero

Scholarship Recipients Announced

Congratulations to this year's scholarship recipients! We received several qualified applications! Our top applicants this year scored VERY close to one another, so the Board chose to award two $500 scholarships!

Isabel Knapp is a graduate of Northern Garrett High School and will be attending Frostburg State University majoring in wildlife & fisheries. During her time at Northern, she was a member of the school's Envirothon team and volunteered at the FSU lab and greenhouse.
 

Zobiana Dillsworth is a graduate of Southern Garrett High School and will be attending Dennison University majoring in environmental science. During her time at Southern, she was a member of the school's Envirothon team where she served as captain for her junior and senior years.

Celebrating 100 Years of the Big Tree Program

The Maryland Big Tree Program turns 100 years old in 2025! We are offering Big Tree Calendars to celebrate. Proceeds benefit our NRCC and Scholarship programs! Each month features a Garrett County Champion Tree. Calendars are $10/each (cash or check) picked up at the Mt. Nebo office. If you would like to purchase calendars in person, please call ahead to 301-334-3296 to ensure someone is available.
 
We will also have calendars available at our booth at the Garrett County Fair!
