Pastoral Message
“Wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” I am overjoyed to join you as your interim minister and to share with you God’s extravagant welcome to all who seek God’s goodness and love. I am honored to journey with you during this interim season in Amicable’s history, which this year reaches its 275th anniversary. Amicable has always been special to me because your retired minister, Bill Sterrett, mentored me through the ordination process more than 15 years ago.
A little about me—I grew up in Wilmington, DE. Both my parents were church musicians in Presbyterian, Methodist, and Episcopal churches. I attended public schools in Wilmington and graduated with a BA in history from the University of Delaware. After undergraduate studies, I went to the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA, where I received my MDiv.
For many years, I was a writer/editor in international and multicultural institutes/centers at Harvard and Brown Universities. During this time, I was drawn to the study of human rights and pursued a MA from Boston College in modern European history with an emphasis on the formation of human rights norms. Currently, I am completing a DMin at Hartford Seminary on how religious organizations intervened in modern humanitarian crises.
I was ordained in 2009 at Brown University’s Manning Chapel where I served on the University Chaplain’s staff. Subsequently, I was the University Multifaith Chaplain and Director of the Office of Spiritual Life at Roger Williams University for eight years. In 2019, I left Roger Williams to complete my DMin and to serve at Edgewood Congregational Church in Cranston.
I love congregational ministry and the opportunities it promises for building multigenerational community. Specifically, I want to learn more about how we can support the spiritual journeys of youth, especially as they prepare for the years after high school.
My spouse, Ricky Brightman, and I live in Warwick’s Gaspee area. She is a permanent deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, serving the Church Beyond the Walls ministry. We have a dog named Nellie Gilles, who is a PBGV. I am passionate about all things rowing and belong to the Narragansett Boat Club.
I am eager to learn more about you as the days proceed.
Blessings to you, Rev. Nancy
