Forbes of Iron
The Forbes of Connecticut built forges and foundries, supplied the new American nation with a wide variety of iron products for war and industry, and became a financial and commercial center for the entire area. John Forbes (1665 – 1713) became a partner in an East Canaan iron forge in 1742 and trained his two sons, Samuel and Elisha, in iron work. After his brother’s death, Samuel became partners with his son-in-law John Adam, Junior, to create the widely-diversified company Forbes & Adam.
