To honor the life of George Floyd and the recent events surrounding his murder, the MPA Student Division dedicates Pride Month to highlighting and honoring Black folks of the LGBTQ communities. We stand in solidarity with our Black, Native, and peers of color. Black lives matter. We offer our grief, condolences, and outrage to the Black community for enduring yet another traumatic violation of human dignity.
We believe that collective outrage by itself is insufficient to effect meaningful change. Lasting reforms require action. We recognize that the uncertainty of the times can be overwhelming. What can you do as students?
Make your voices heard!
We believe that advocacy is empowering and transformative. We encourage students to volunteer as they are able, donate to just causes, and protest peacefully. We encourage you to speak with your institutions, and challenge your leadership not only to condemn the indefensible injustice of police brutality, but to take decisive action at a local level to combat it. As future counselors and psychologists, we know that avoiding discomfort and pain leads to internal distress and only enhances feelings of helplessness. With that in mind, we encourage psychology students to contribute to the Student Voices blog and share your experiences. Peer support and advocacy are powerful forms of self-care.
