Can my employer stop me from praying at work? |
Hey there! No - your job can't stop you from praying at work. But, on the flip side, your workplace isn't obligated to carve out specific prayer times for you during the day. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), it's a no-no for employers to brush off your sincere religious beliefs under Title 7 of the Civil Rights Act. If you're keen on setting aside time for prayer, just shoot a message to your boss. As long as it's a genuinely held religious practice, you're good to go with your prayers during work hours. Keep in mind a sincere religion is all about those moral and ethical beliefs that guide how you live your life. 🙋🏽‍♀️ Civil Rights Pioneer Meet Mary White Ovington |
Mary Ovington was one of the Co-Founders of the NAACP and a strong advocate for women’s rights. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1865, Mary had a firsthand experience of the injustice that women faced during this time. The importance of the civil rights movement moved Mary to create a national conference to discuss justice and civil rights for Black Americans. Her involvement in the movement led to her being appointed Executive Secretary of the NAACP in 1909 alongside leaders like W.E.B Du Bois and Ida B.Wells-Barnett. She was also a part of committees that studied the unemployment and housing problems that plagued the black community in the New York area with the Greenpoint Settlement in Brooklyn which was a housing project to help the urban poor learn skills and adapt to the city life better. As a result, she wrote a book called Half a Man arguing that white prejudice is preventing Black Americans from receiving opportunities to develop their capacities. This book along with some of her other work can be found online at The Library of Congress. To learn more about Women's and Gay rights, check out our Know Your Reyets tab on our website. |
