Greetings Fellow Patriots! Summer is flying by! School is starting and campaign season activities are already underway! We are still looking for a few quality candidates for various offices across the county. For more information, please contact Ron Redden at ViceChair@arapahoerepublicans.org. I’m happy to report that many great candidates have already stepped up to serve our communities! Our candidates will need support during this Fall’s election, and not surprisingly, they’ll need donations and help from volunteers. Please consider supporting our efforts and also volunteering your time to help get them elected. You can make a donation Here. If you’d like us to contact you for our Get-Out-The-Vote efforts, please sign up on our website by clicking Here. You can also learn more about becoming an Election Judge or Poll Watcher. A special GOP State Central Committee Meeting (SCC) was held this past Saturday, August 5th. We elected Hope Scheppelman as our new Vice Chair. Hope is a US Navy Veteran, Critical Care Nurse Practitioner and the current Secretary of the La Plata County Republican Party. She took an early lead in the first-round vote. Before the second-round vote, candidates Dr. Stu Asay and Aaron Wood both dropped out of the race and pledged their support of Hope, facilitating Hope to handily win her election. Several Bylaw proposals were passed, and one was referred back to the Bylaws Committee. The Media has recently been focusing extra attention on the divisions within our Party, in part, due to the proposed Bylaw Amendment 7, also known as the Bonniwell Amendment. It was drafted to help overcome the very high bar set by Prop 108 passed in 2016, requiring that 75% of a party’s State Central Committee must vote to opt out of our state’s Open Primary System. The amendment proposed that any State Central Committee member who was absent from the meeting where the vote was taken, or failed to cast a ballot would be counted as a “yes” vote. There was a lot of debate about this amendment, as you might imagine. I wasn’t sure how heated the conversations at our SCC meeting would become. Republicans – you can be proud! Although many of us felt strongly, on both sides of this issue, the discussion was very respectful for the most part. One group present successfully petitioned for a roll call vote by county. The vote was 186.83 in favor to 149.16 opposed (some counties have proportional votes). Two thirds of total SCC members or 221.76 is required to pass an amendment, so the measure failed. I’ve said a number of times, “One of the best things about Republicans is that they are independent thinkers... and one of the worst things about Republicans is that they are independent thinkers.” I tend to look for the positives in life and in situations. I saw a well-run meeting with a few minor glitches which were efficiently resolved. I heard calls for ways to work together toward our common goals. I was so pleased to get that message from the State Party and will continue to work at building unity in our county. |

Meet Your Newly Elected Vice-Chairwoman, Hope Scheppelman |
If you have not met her yet, I'd like to introduce you to Hope Scheppelman, the new Colorado Republican Party Vice-Chairwoman. Hope is a US Navy Veteran, Critical Care Nurse Practitioner and hails from La Plata County. She was elected by the State Central Committee, August 5th, in Castle Rock. |
Please join me in sending her a welcome and congratulations at her new email address Hope@cologop.org.
I was impressed by Hope's campaign and nomination speech that focused on representing grassroots activists across the state, not just the big counties, and standing strong for our conservative family values. I am also thrilled at her commitment to unity in the party, loyalty to our platform, and especially working together when she said: "I'm humbled and grateful to help lead OUR Colorado Republican Party for the next election cycle. Working closely with Dave Williams and our other Party officers, I will do all I can to ensure we succeed as a united, tough, and effective party to stop the radicals in control of our state government." - Hope Scheppelman, Vice-Chairwoman, Colorado Republican Party Please join me in welcoming Hope to help lead our Party to a return to greatness.

Colorado State Republican Party Files Lawsuit Against Attorney General Jena Griswald to Overturn the Open Primary Law |
We have filed suit against Jena Griswold to overturn the unconstitutional open primary law.
The Colorado Republican Party is suing to protect our right to have Republican voters choose our Republican nominees as guaranteed in the First Amendment.
The current unconstitutional open primary scheme allows for Democrats, and other leftwing groups, to interfere in our primary nomination outcomes so they can weaken our general election prospects.
We welcome all unaffiliated voters to join our Party if they want to have a say in selecting our nominees but we will not stand idly by as radical leftwing organizations use an unconstitutional law to further harm our election efforts. It's no secret that despite the overwhelming majority (near unanimous in fact) of our Republican State Central Committee voting to officially pursue a lawsuit against the unconstitutional open primary two years ago, the past administration and Chairwoman didn't make this critical effort a priority. We've turned a corner now and are pleased to announce that an actual bank account was created and is being maintained. We are ready to accept funds for those who want to chip in.
Furthermore, we have an independent oversight committee chaired by former State Senator Kevin Lundberg who is leading the charge on this important project. The committee has been quietly working to put everything in place for this announcement and, ultimately, for our Party to be successful in this fight.
Here's the truth, Republicans Should Choose Republican Candidates.
That should be a self-evident statement, but in Colorado it is not true. In 2022 more than twice as many unaffiliated voters received a Republican ballot in the primary than registered Republicans, and nearly 40% of those who voted in the Republican primary were not registered Republicans. This upside-down election policy has been in place since the 2016 election, when Colorado voters adopted the open primary system. It permits unaffiliated voters to vote in our primary. Since then there has been a significant drop in Colorado Republican membership, there are no statewide Republican elected officials, the legislature has the least number of Republicans in 80 years and the number of Republican county officials is dropping. The open primary has been devastating to the Colorado GOP. It has opened the floodgates to liberal progressives who are fundamentally transforming Colorado into a high-tax, broken-economy, big-government, woke-world. The open primary has also ratcheted up the cost of primary elections for counties and candidates. County clerks must print, mail and process millions more ballots. Primary candidates are forced to spend much more at the primary level to expand their outreach as the raw numbers of ballots and voters is that much bigger. Finally, the open primary is not constitutional. In 2000 the US Supreme Court’s Jones decision declared that a political party cannot be forced into an open primary system. At a minimum it violates the citizens’ constitutional freedom of association. For all of these reasons the Republican State Central Committee voted to challenge the open primary in federal court and the party's executive board has also voted to move forward with this lawsuit. For Freedom, Dave Dave Williams Chairman, Colorado Republicans |

The Colorado Women's Alliance Explains Prop. HH in Just Two Simple Sentences Colorado voters will be asked, in November, to vote on Proposition HH. As with most ballot measures, it is written to sound very good and appealing. It starts out, “Shall the State reduce property taxes….” And, of course, like most ballot measures, that’s misleading and the actual text of the measure is complex. You will, and likely are already, seeing social media posts and news coverage, and have probably received the first of many mail pieces about Proposition HH. You will be bombarded with numbers and formulas and forecasts. One such piece, designed to “simplify” the measure included the following dollar amounts – in just one piece: $1,074 million; $620 million; $2 billion; $145 million; $72 million; $287 million; $3.5 billion; $21 million; $94.3 million; $620 million; $2.2 billion; $128 million; $161.3 million; $278 million; $351 million. Ouch, ooh, gosh...my head... So, here’s what it all boils down to. Here are the two sentences that you need to know when you vote your ballot this fall: 1) If Proposition HH passes, it will only TEMPORARILY reduce property taxes. 2) If Proposition HH passes, it will reduce your Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) refunds FOREVER and eventually PHASE THEM OUT! That’s it. All that mumbo jumbo, simply explained in two sentences. Property owners – your property taxes will still go up, just not as drastically. Renters – your rent will still go up, because your landlord needs to recoup his/her increase in taxes. Everybody – your TABOR refunds (remember those $750 or $1,500 checks?) will permanently be decreased and, because of a change in formula, eventually will go away forever. The Colorado Women’s Alliance urges you to remember those two simple sentences when it comes time to mark your ballots. Vote “no” on Proposition HH. Please spread the word to vote "NO" on Proposition HH. |

Training on "How to be More Persuasive" Provided to our District Captains, Precinct Leaders and Candidates |
Melanie Sturm, a Colorado Conservative and internationally renowned speaker and trainer has developed a unique and effective approach to engaging and persuading people to first consider your position and then move towards your side of the argument. |
On Saturday, August 5th, a room full of Arapahoe County Republican District Captains, Precinct Leaders, and candidates running for local and state offices participated in a half-day training session focused on how to be more persuasive in messaging and interactions with people on important issues. The training was provided by Melanie Sturm who started her conservative consulting company a few years back after she had sent a letter to the editor of her local newspaper which was published and was so popular that the editor invited her to pen a regular column for the paper. After a number of years as a columnist addressing local and national issues from a conservative standpoint in a very liberal town, she turned her successful approaches of persuading people into a very effective training system and then founded her company, Engage to Win to share her proven techniques with conservatives across the state, nation and internationally. Read our Interview with Melanie We interviewed Melanie and she shared more of her background, stories about her success as a columnist and her wide-ranging experiences coaching and training both individual candidates and conservative organizations. She also goes into greater detail about her techniques of persuasion. You can read the full interview Here. |
Here are some of Melanie's perspectives and approaches. We think you will indeed find them engaging. |
"Engaging to win" is not about winning debates or talking points or even elections. It’s about winning people over to the common ground they instinctively share by engaging in meaningful conversations that transcend obstacles to agreement. That’s how we change minds, behavior, and culture while elevating our discourse – whether in workplaces, families, social media, and beyond. THE SIX POWERS OF PERSUASION 1. YOU Are The Message! In-person communication is 60-90% non-verbal, so use "pre-suasion" to build rapport, likability and trust. Trusting relationships open hearts and hearts open minds, helping remove barriers to agreement. 2. Find the COMMON GROUND: People are best persuaded by the reasons which they have themselves discovered. Remember, it's not what you say but what people hear that matters. 3. The winning side always fights for PEOPLE, not THINGS! People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care! To come across as caring, fight for people, especially the most vulnerable, not abstract things. Don't just talk about policies or facts; talk first about the people who benefit from or will be hurt by them. 4. Use a FAIRNESS and COMPASSION frame: We can reach everyone through moral domains. Compassion is the opposite of harm, it is the cherishing and protecting of others, advancing human wellbeing. Fairness, the opposite of cheating, the belief that fair exchanges yields mutual happiness. Money arguments must be framed by compassion and fairness of they are viewed as uncaring. 5. Tell STORIES: Many think stores are shaped by people. In fact, people are shaped by stories. Stories convery emotion, are relatable and resonate in ways that facts and data do not. Stories are memorable and irrefutable, allowing us to connect and build credibility and trust. 6. Use RHETORICAL DEVICES to Pivot to better ground: Your 80% friend is not your 20% foe. Show you Care! Use "I worry/am concerned that..." to pivot to your persuasive argument. Ask rhetorical questions, don't make declarative statements - so people own their answer. "Persuasion is the act of replacing someone's perspective with something they come to believe is better." "Encourage people to imagine that better result." Colorado State Republican Party Conducts a Transparent Election |
“You will never lose sight of your ballots today,” announced Peg Cage to a cheering audience, introducing the voting process for the GOP State Central Committee meeting Saturday, August 5th. We were set to elect a new Vice-Chair and vote on an important amendment. The (literally) transparent “Glass Box” process worked remarkably well, solving conflict but showing other areas the GOP can improve. Many Arapahoe Republicans were on the teller committee, having seen paper ballots used at our own elections back in February. The state GOP elections in March also used some aspects of the process, but Saturday was the first state-level experience of the full system and its double/quadruple-check for collecting, counting, and totaling ballots. Here's how it worked. Collecting: A three-person team held the see-through ballot box, tallied each ballot going in, and marked the voter’s ID tag as having voted. With about 360 ballots (half of which were proxies) the six teams only had on average 60 ballots each. When voting closed, the teams carried the ballot boxes onstage in full sight of the assembly. Counting: On stage each team sat at a table. The middle person read and showed each ballot to the right and left team members tallying the ballots. The right and left counting sheets had to agree with each other, as well as match the number of ballots recorded in the ballot box. Counting went quickly in spite of the fractional-vote complication – several Colorado counties divide votes between two or three people, so fractional ballots were distinctly marked, and tallied separately from the full votes. Totaling: The counting sheets then went to the totaling teams. These teams totaled the counts (and fractions) from all six counting teams. This was the only stage electronic devices were used – calculators for those who aren’t good at adding 2/3+3/2+59 under pressure – but the calculator answers were checked against each other and the process could work the same with an abacus! Each team checked their totals with each other, and then with the other team, for a quadruple cross-check. Results for the first vice-chair vote were delayed because ballot totals didn’t match the voters present as reported by the credentialing committee! Since at that point the ballot totals had been double-checked, cross-checked, and spoiled ballots accounted for, the number of ballots was the reliable number. So credentials had to be rechecked. A step was added to ballot collection for the second vote – each person/proxy got re-checked against the list of members before voting. Credentialing always takes a while, but the voting and counting went faster with the teams now confident in the process. This time totals matched. The two votes resulted in a clear, transparent, and decisive win for Hope Scheppelman as vice-chair. After watching the process openly performed before all, some were happy, some were sad, but Republicans agreed this leader’s election was fair and was viewed to be fair. The costs for this peace of mind: a ream or two of paper, the printing, pens, and plexiglass boxes…and of course the volunteer counters and watchers. The Amendment 7 vote was somewhat less transparent because due to a call for a roll-call vote by county and therefore, the Glass Box process couldn’t be used. We believe the vote was accurate, but we can’t know in certainty because of the roll-call vote process which is less transparent. However, the margin of no to yes votes was so significant that any minor discrepancies that may have occurred would not have changed the outcome. In applying the most transparent and reliable of voting methodologies in conducting the election of the State Vice-Chair, the Colorado Republican Party exemplified and demonstrated the very highest standards of election integrity. As avid proponents of election integrity, we must advocate that all local, statewide and national elections seek the same transparency resulting in outcomes that all can trust. |
