Tour of Quail Springs Permaculture

The mission of Quail Springs is similar to the mission of Our Global Family Farm....

To empower students of all ages and backgrounds with knowledge, skills and inspiration essential to cultivating ecological and social health.

Quail Springs is located in the rural Cuyama Valley of California, one of the state’s most critically overdrafted water basins. Quail Springs resides on 450 acres of unceded Chumash land, surrounded by thousands of acres of Los Padres National Forest.

Cooperation on the Farm

Our Global Family Farm and City Farm SLO are cooperating on a project using a permaculture technique called "Hugelkultur."

City Farm SLO is making a “Garden for All” which is a series of raised beds for the disabled and will be wheelchair accessible.

The raised beds are HUGE, so they are utilizing the permaculture technique of “Hugelkultur” inside the raised beds. They will put biomass at the bottom of their raised beds.

That means they need large amounts of biomass in the form of branches from trees and bushes to put in the bottom of the raised beds. And, Our Global Family Farm has the biomass! So, we are giving them all the branches they will need to fill the raised beds.

After the atmospheric rives there was so much water at the end of the field that our native plants died. We had to cut out the dead coffee berry, coyote bush and black sage bushes. These will be used to put at the bottom of the raised beds. Win – Win!

Come to the farm on Sundays to check it out! We are there every Sunday, 9am to 1pm.

We need MORE cooperation on the farm. In other words, we need folks like YOU to come out to the farm.

Another Win/Win is that farmers at City Farm SLO are all part of a cooperative farmstand. The farmstand is on Wednesdays 2:30 to 5:30pm.

And, from Our Global Family Farm we have global items in the farmstand:

We have…

African Gourds

Asian Luffa Sponge

European Bay Leaves

Native American Rainbow Corn

International Potpourri

Come out on Wednesdays at City Farm SLO to shop at the farmstand.
