As an idea for the next newsletter issues, we would like to dive into the processual improvisation of music with you in small bites. - So, let's get started: Basically, improvisation is the simultaneous invention and performance of music, where inventor and performer are one. Improvisation happens immediately and makes a musical thought audible at the moment of its creation. Genauer betrachtet bedeutet das: Improvisation ist prozesshaft, weil der Weg (das Erfinden) gleichzeitig das Ziel (die Verklanglichung) ist. Freie Improvisation ist unvorhersehbar, da selbst der/die Musizierende/n erst im Augenblick der konkreten Verklanglichung Gewissheit darüber erlangen, was genau sie spielen. Daher ist das Improvisieren immer ein Wagnis, was von den Spielenden eine intensive körperlich-seelisch- geistige Präsenz erfordert. Es entsteht eine Atmosphäre gespannter Gegenwärtigkeit, die nicht nur Spieler spüren, sondern die sich auf jeden aufmerksamen Zuhörer überträgt. Es gibt verschiedene Arten von Improvisation. - Sie lassen sich unterscheiden durch das Ausmaß an musikalischer Freiheit, die sie den einzelnen Musikern zugestehen. Am Anfang der Skala steht das freie Improvisieren. Es vermeidet jegliche Vorgaben sowie eventuelle vorherige Absprachen der Musiker untereinander. Der gesamte verfügbare Fundus an Tönen und Geräuschen steht den Improvisierenden zur Verfügung: Sie können spielen, was und wie sie wollen - nichts ist verboten, da der Gebrauch musikalischen Materials nicht eingeschränkt ist. Das Ausprobieren kann sich entweder auf ein Instrument oder, wie bei Ströhm-Music, auf elektronische Klangerzeuger beziehen, dessen spezifischen Klänge und technische Möglichkeiten dabei erkundet werden. More precisely, this means: Improvisation is processual, because the way (the invention) is at the same time the goal (the sonification). Free improvisation is unpredictable, because even the musician(s) only gain certainty about what exactly they are playing at the moment of the concrete sonification. Therefore, improvisation is always a risk, which requires an intensive physical-mental-psychological presence. An atmosphere of tense presence is created, which not only players feel, but which is transmitted to every attentive listener. There are different types of improvisation. - They can be distinguished by the degree of musical freedom they allow individual musicians. At the beginning of the scale is free improvisation. It avoids any guidelines as well as possible prior agreements among the musicians. The entire available fund of sounds and noises is at the disposal of the improvisers: they can play what and how they want - nothing is forbidden, since the use of musical material is not restricted. The experimentation can refer either to an instrument or, as in Ströhm-Music, to electronic sound generators, whose specific sounds and technical possibilities are explored in the process. But it can also refer to the improvising musicians themselves, who explore themselves in trying out their own musical and instrumental technical abilities.

Hier endet für heute unser kleiner Ausflug in die Welt der Improvisation. Noch einen kleinen Hinweis in eigener Sache: Wir sprechen auf unserer Ströhm-Music-Homepage von improvisativer Musik. Was ist der Unterschied? Improvisative Musik verstehen wir als das aktive prozessorientierte Geschehen innerhalb einer Improvisation. Während improvisierte Musik von einem fertigen oder unfertigen Stück ausgeht, das im Moment der Darbietung oder Ausführung nicht so gespielt werden kann oder soll, wie es vorgesehen war. Deshalb muss das Unvorhergesehene innerhalb dieses Stückes mit einem Kunstgriff im Sinne einer Improvisation überbrückt werden.
