Art that Warms the Heart

Read below about my artist news and updates.

What Jolie Is Up To

Happy April! In my last newsletter, I mentioned using sketchbooks and making works on paper during the past year. And in March, I happily finished filling the watercolor sketchbook I had started in late November; it is filled with gouache paintings, (an opaque water-based medium, similar to watercolors), and oil pastel drawings. See the video below for a quick tour of the finished sketchbook.

In March, I also started work on two new sketchbook with the idea of dedicating one to watercolors and one to oil pastels, but that changed when I painted a gouache in my oil pastel book; oops! Just joking, I painted in the oil pastel sketchbook intentionally to see how well its 100% cotton paper worked with gouache. The test came out fine; I liked the results.

Below are two pieces from one of my new sketchbooks.

Here is my oil pastel version of "Rosie the Riveter" that I made in honor of Women's History Month in March.

Here is my oil pastel study of Georgia O'Keeffe's "Blue Morning Glory".

Many of my gouaches and oil pastels from my sketchbooks are now available as downloadable PDF prints. Click the below button to see the full collection.

Virtual Markets

This May - July, I am participating in three virtual markets on Facebook. In addition to products sold and/or made by small business owners, there are sales and live streamed events. For my live streamed events, I will do demonstrations of my art process. The days and times for the demos are TBD, but the virtual markets dates are May 22 - 27, June 19 - 24 and July 17 - 22. More info coming soon and will be posted on my Events page.

New Artwork

Earlier this month, I attended a 2-day painting workshop, called "Exploring Abstraction". It was a great and challenging experience where I learned a new approach for starting an artwork and how to turn a real world inspiration into an abstract art piece. During the workshop, I made the below piece, which I call "Jubilant Dance"; it was inspired by the lyrics of a praise song. Additionally, this piece is one of two I entered into the Guilford Art League's Spring Fever Group Show.

Calendars are coming back! My plan is to bring them back this Fall. Stay tuned for more information to come out later this year.
