March, 2022 Newsletter

Welcome, March.

There are dark clouds over the world as I write this newsletter and this picture, which I took on my morning walk, reflects my gloomy mood.

I'll be working hard on Maggie D'arcy #4 this month and also getting ready for some in-person appearances and conventions later this year, conditions willing. In April I'll be at Malice Domestic in Bethesda, MD. In September I'll fly to Minneapolis for Bouchercon, and in November I'll be convening close to home for New England Crimebake. I may try to attend some other gatherings as well. Below, I write a bit about mystery conventions and ask if you've ever thought about going to one.

I also share a sweet treat perfect for the season.

Most of all this month, I hope for peace and safety for all the people of the world. Take good care.

Sarah

The Conventions of Crime

It sounds like the setting of a novel (and it has been) but every (non-pandemic) year, mystery and suspense authors and readers gather to talk all things crime.

Sugar on Snow. It's a sweet and seasonal treat here in Vermont and anywhere that has snow and a tradition of syrup-making. When I said I was sharing the recipe, one of my kids said, "It's hardly a recipe." True, but here's how you do it: Heat a cup of REAL maple syrup until it reaches 234 degrees on a candy thermometer. Let it cool for a few minutes and then pour the syrup in thin ribbons over packed, fresh snow, or shaved ice or ice cream. Eat with your fingers or a fork. (Vermonters often serve with pickles to cut the sweetness.)
