This month we are going ‘back to the drawing board’ as we welcome Artist of the Month Dwayne Brimah. His forthcoming exhibition at Cass Art in Hampstead is the perfect excuse to spend an afternoon in a lovely part of London. We also take a sneak peek into the work of the two artists selected for the ArtULTRA residency at The Hari: Matilde Merli and Emmanuel Unaji. Details of their exhibition will be announced soon.

ARTIST FEATURE: DWAYNE BRIMAH

404 by Dwayne Brimah. Accompanying music here.

Two of the defining influences on Dwayne’s work are pop culture and music - predominantly hip hop and R&B. To give viewers an insight into his process, Dwayne pairs each of his artworks with a mini playlist of songs that inspired or accompanied the realisation of that particular work. As you look at Dwayne’s work, we encourage you to listen to the songs as well, to get in the right mood. For those of you who don’t want to hop from one track to the another, stream music from radio station Soulection which is often playing in the background when Dwayne works.

Currently, Dwayne is a self-employed illustrator and graphic designer. Having studied graphic design and illustration at the University of Hertfordshire, his training is reflected in his technical approach to creating artistic work. To get a sense of his technique, watch the short video capturing his creation of Allure. Dwayne’s process is deceptively simple: there is a controlled ebullience or ordered messiness to his pointillist and scribble technique. Dwayne uses micron pens; specifically 0.05 when it comes to creating his pointillism and scribble artworks, and for his colour pieces, Dwayne uses Copic and Pro Markers - on weighted paper. He creates rich and textured artworks that capture the soul of his subjects. You can read more and see more of Dwayne's work @artultra_net or on the website www.artultra.net/artists.

As restrictions ease up, Dwayne will be exhibiting his latest floral series, Subdued, at Cass Art in Hampstead, from 24th May-13th June. Why not visit Dwayne’s exhibition and take the opportunity to explore Hampstead? For a suggested itinerary, read on below…

If you are interested in purchasing any of Dwayne’s work, feel free to contact him via his website, or message him on one of his social platforms linked below.

A WALK AROUND HAMPSTEAD

Having enjoyed Dwayne’s display at Cass Art and stocked up on lots of art materials in the shop, head to Flask Walk - a quirky little street off the main Hampstead High Street where you will find a bunch of independent shops, cafes, pubs, and the best sushi in London Sushi Hana. From there, you are 10 minutes from the stunning grounds of Hampstead Heath: you can stroll into the woods and perhaps venture into Kenwood House, a stately Regency manor, and catch beautiful views of the city from Parliament Hill. As you make your way downhill towards South End Green, come out of the Heath and enjoy either a delicious Italian gelato at The Nook, or visit the best bakery and cake shop in North West London, Karma Bread for a treat. Everything there is scrumptious – the vegan brownie is one not to miss!

If it’s more art you’re after, take a 15-minute walk from Hampstead Tube station towards Finchley Road, to a meanwhile space which has been converted into a gallery and artist studios. Artist Heini King has co-opted the windows on Finchley Road to present a selection of her work in a display called By the Window. She presents a mix of mono prints and performance art, gathering works made from direct observation in public spaces over the last year, inspired by people in movement. There are some truly beautiful and delicately executed artworks here. By the Window is on until 31 May at Studio 551-557 in Hampstead, 551-557 Finchley Road NW3 7BJ.

ArtULTRA ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

In April, ArtULTRA and The Hari, a five star hotel in Belgravia, selected two artists in residence to work at the hotel from 26 April until 28 May in hotel rooms converted into artist studios. Follow Emmanuel Unaji’s and Matilde Merli’s work in progress on artultra.net/artultraresidents . These two artists could not be more different (with Emmanuel twice as tall as Matilde for starters), but both are incredibly talented. Check out the two short snippets from their interviews with ArtULTRA below. From June to November, The Hari will host an exhibition of Emmanuel and Matilde’s work at the hotel. You will hear all about it in next month’s newsletter.
