AN INVITATION FROM HILARY LAURIE TO CONTRIBUTE TO AN HLSI ARCHIVES PROJECT: Reflections in Lockdown

What will be our collective memory of Covid-19, of the greater part of a year spent in lockdown? What will we choose to remember and what will we choose to forget? We tend to remember distinct events; things that seem to last forever leave a smaller imprint.

There are already calls for memorials to the pandemic. But events are still raw and continuing. It’s too early to make sense of it. Nonetheless, this is a historic moment, one we and others will look back on and seek to understand. There will not be one story, for our suffering has been unequal. Yet everyone has lost something. Many of us have experienced loneliness, anxiety and mistrust, and felt acutely the loss of personal contact. At the same time we have found ourselves to be members of a community we did not know existed, part of a grassroots revolution powered by neighbourhood support groups, millions given to charity, people acting out of love and principle to help each other.

What is your experience of life under Covid, of life in lockdown? We would like to know. We want to collect the reflections of everyone living in Highgate and thereabouts which we will add to the HLSI archives, creating a record of what we feel and are experiencing at this unprecedented time. You may choose to write about one aspect of your life, about a particular incident, or you may wish to comment more generally. Whatever you decide, we ask you to limit yourself to 200 words. Should you wish, you can submit your text anonymously. Please send it to archives@hlsi.net , or by post to the Archives, 11 South Grove, N6 6BS, before 21 June 2021.

HIGHGATE GALLERY, HLSI, 11 South Grove

THE VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE SHOW until Apr 15th

Tom Scase’s recent works are vibrant and zestful and mark a welcome start to Highgate Gallery’s new year of shows.

Despite their joyful presentation, a darkly sinister undertone lingers beneath the playful surface marks in these paintings, creating strange landscapes where cloned sheep, menacing bees and warplanes are juxtaposed with abstract forms. Materials used include paints, collage, ink, varnishes and natural substances such as tree bark and mud from Hampstead Heath. Visit Tom's virtual exhibition here.

PHILIP DIGGLE: HERE AND NOW 16 - 29 April

Inspired by an enduring fascination for the physicality of oil paint and the “intense physical process” he calls painting, Diggles’ large-scale abstract paintings in oil and enamel, wildly exuberant and massive, fill the gallery with an almost untamed energy. Victoria Hall, HLSI.

Gallery open: Tues-Fri 1-5pm, Sat 11am-4pm, Sun 11am- 5pm. Visitor numbers are limited and all are required to wear face coverings. Sign up as a Friend of Highgate Gallery to receive exhibition information by post: gallery@hlsi.net

HIGHGATE ARCHITECTURAL WALK: English architecture through 500 years, within the space of 800 yards. There is a choice of two websites offering the same walk:

https://www.highgatesociety.com/media/docs/North%20Hill%20descriptions.pdf

https://www.haringey.gov.uk/sites/haringeygovuk/files/north_hill_architectural_walk.pdf

THE NORTHERN HEIGHTS TEN SELF GUIDED WALKS:  There are ten walks in total:  (1) a nine mile circular walk around Highgate, Hampstead and Hampstead Heath divided into five walks; and (2) a 15 mile walk linking Camden Town and Alexandra Palace also divided into five walks. The guides are only available as hard copy publications which can be bought from local Highgate retailers or ordered by downloading and completing an order form:

https://www.highgatesociety.com/media/docs/northern-heights-orderform.pdf

THE MOSELLE RIVER 5 MILE SELF-GUIDED WALK: The Moselle is Haringey’s hidden river, running across the width of the borough from its source in Queen’s Wood, Highgate, to its confluence with the River Lea near Tottenham Hale. Click to download self-guided maps from the www.haringeyfriendsofparks.org.uk website

HAMPSTEAD HEATH: THREE WALKS: The City of London Corporation has created a series of self-guided walks throughout London and here's one for Hampstead Heath which gives 3 trail options of varying lengths. Pick your favorite to take in the historic sites and wildlife to enjoy here: Click for details and a map

NORTH LONDON URBAN RAMBLE: PARKLAND WALK, HIGHGATE & ALEXANDRA PALACE: [11.5km, 7.2 miles] This walk will simply amaze you for its incredible amount of green spaces. It is hard to believe you are so close to the centre of the country's capital, rambling thorough just about every type of green space imaginable. Time 3 hours; start Finsbury Park Cafe [N4 2NQ]; finish Alexandra Palace Station [N22 7ST]. Note (1) Parkland Walk can be muddy so wear appropriate shoes; (2) consider doing this walk in reverse so it is mainly downhill and you finish at Finsbury Park where there are many transport links. Click for map and info.
