A Message from the Poʻi Nā Nalu Staff

Aloha mai e nā pua o Poʻi Nā Nalu,

We hope that you and your ʻohana are safe and healthy, and are adjusting well to our new reality for the Spring semester. We are dedicated to supporting you through this challenging time, and will continue to do our best to keep you connected academically, professionally, and culturally.

Here are some important updates/reminders:

  • Hulili Ke Kukui Hawaiian Center is closed for in-person and face-to-face activities. We will continue to provide services remotely via phone, e-mail, ZOOM, STAR Balance Advising, and MySuccess.
  • All of our previously-scheduled events have been canceled, but some events may be rescheduled at a later time.
  • Participate in our do-at-home activities! You can still fulfill your Poʻi Nā Nalu two-event requirement if you have not already. While we cannot take you on huakaʻi or hold workshops at this time, we will be sending you virtual activities that can be done at home through which you can receive participation credit. Have fun with the activities and share them with your ʻohana.
  • Continue to check your e-mails daily. We try to minimize the number of e-mails we send you, but we have lots of important information for you folks. Mahalo for bearing with us.
  • Engage with us on Instagram! If you don't already, follow us at @poinanalu_nhctep and Hulili Ke Kukui Hawaiian Center at @hulilikekukui. We are leveling up our IG engagement and have begun posting fun activities you can participate in such as polls, IG story "challenges", and competitive giveaways!
  • Visit our Poʻi Nā Nalu website. We are actively working to keep our website up-to-date.

Our Huaʻōlelo o ka Mahina series features a new Hawaiian word each month. We hope that you will utilize these terms in your everyday conversations by simply plugging them into your sentences. Before you know it, they will become a natural part of your vocabulary!

OLA

Definition: “Life, health, well-being, living, livelihood...”

Ola loa - Long life, longevity

Mauli ola - breath of life, power of healing

Ola can also be used in place of "bless you" when someone sneezes

(Pukui & Elbert, “Hawaiian Dictionary”)

Usage example: "Take care of all aspects of your ola to maintain physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental balance."

("Take care of all aspects of your life to maintain physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental balance.")

Review of previous words:

  • Pōmaikaʻi - blessing, prosperity, good fortune
  • Haʻawina - lesson, assignment, task
  • Kākoʻo - to support, uphold, assist
  • Noke - to persist, continue, repeat, persevere
  • Kuleana - responsibility, right, privilege

Worth 1 Participation Credit

KILOHANA

Student of the Month

Casen Cluney

Tell us a little about yourself.

Aloha mai kākou. My name is Casen and I am originally from Kāneʻohe but I moved to Kailua 10 years ago and currently reside there. I graduated from Kamehameha Schools Kapālama in 2018 and I am now in the Fire & Environmental Emergency Response Program here at Honolulu Community College.

What are your future plans? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Firefighting is something I am very passionate about and that's why I am fully invested into becoming one and serving my community here in Hawaiʻi. But first, I am focused on graduating and taking all that I learned into the fire service and passing on the knowledge to others.

In 10 years, I hope to be someone that our kānaka can look up to and look towards for any type of help or assistance while still perpetuating my culture and honoring my kūpuna every step of the way.

How has Poʻi Nā Nalu helped you through your academic journey at HonCC?

Poʻi Nā Nalu has truly been family to me and they have helped me to pursue my dream job and also understanding my roots. They have supported me financially, mentally and culturally in my path to becoming a firefighter. It has been such an honor to be a part of this amazing program.
