JANUARY 2024 NEWSLETTER

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy 2024 neighbors,

I hope you are having fun in the snow then cuddling up in the warm. The hills in our front yard are perfect for my toddlers. I get the biggest workout pulling them around. We watched some older kids sled down the alley yesterday! Morton Meadows is the place to live for sledding… maybe not driving this time of year. I am praying your 2024 is off to a sweet, safe, snowy start.

We have included our calendar for the year. Please let us know if there’s anything you’d like to add. We’d love to see you at our next meeting: January 23rd at 7PM at the Mizpah Lodge.

If you have a neighbor that goes above and beyond, please bring their name to the meeting. This year we are giving out the Mayberry Award at each meeting. I will nominate my neighbors, Megan and Paul Dunning. This past week, they helped watch my kids and helped me drop off my car at the body shop. The same day, Paul was out snow blowing the sidewalk on our block. Thank you Paul and Megan!

 Winter Gardening

New Hardiness Zone

In November the USDA changed our hardiness zone to 6A which means our minimum average extreme low is now -5* instead of -10.

So, if you see some zone 6A perennials this spring remember temp is not your only consideration; soil, micro climates and plant health to name a few should be taken into account. Proceed with caution.

Our Easter egg hunt will be March 30th on Twin Ridge Blvd. at 10am.

Mark your calendars!

A Positive Perspective In The New Year

Well friends, 2024 has officially arrived. Many of us are focusing on resolutions for the new year such as losing weight, getting more exercise, drinking more water (my personal favorite), etcetera. While these are good goals, this year might I also suggest a change in perspective?

Coming off of the holidays and the end of year chaos, events in the news, coupled with the cold weather and the short days of winter, it is easy to develop a negative perspective.

When our mind is negative, it affects our attitude. Negativity is addictive. But we can turn negativity into something positive.

Here are some tips to consider:

1)  Take time for yourself. It doesn’t have to be hours. Twenty minutes a day can make an impact. Each of us has to decide what those twenty minutes consist of.  Maybe it is meditation. Meditation is a great way to clear negativity.  It can heal the mind and rid the body of harmful chemicals that cause stress.

2)  Practice kindness.  Kindness is contagious.  When someone is kind to you it inspires you to be kind to another person much like a domino effect.  Kindness inspires gratitude and makes us happier and less stressed.

3)  Be thankful.  Studies have shown that gratitude make us happier because it produces dopamine, the chemical that can drown out negative thoughts and anxiety.  Gratitude invokes the law of attraction – if you make an effort to be grateful, you will be blessed with more to be grateful for. Start a gratitude list and you will see what I mean. Over time your list will grow as you add more things to be grateful for and your attitude will change.  Wishing you all peace and a positive perspective in the New Year!
