Over four sunny (and sometimes really warm) summer days, CSPA held its signature event for men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Capably led by Rick Clendenen and Paul Matthewson and assisted by 50 volunteers, the tournament was the scene for amazing pickleball play by nearly 200 participants. See event results, photos and video on the CSPA website. Player feedback highlights the well-run event and the wonderful welcoming spirit of the organizers and volunteers. New this year (and well received) – a separate warm-up area, use of text messages to alert players to their games, and court monitors to help get players to the right court and ensure that scores were correctly transferred to the technical desk. A SPECIAL thank you to Fran Horvath, chief volunteer wrangler, super-hero volunteers Diane ONeill, Jenn Chang and ALL the volunteers who put in lots of hours before, during and even after the event. Special shout out to Brett Haggerty for making new awards stands. |

Labor Day 2023 Round Robin |
A full house of 40 players (2 sessions) turned out to play in this year's CSPA Labor Day Tournament. This year's event featured a new format with 2 rounds of Round Robin play. The initial round started with 4 groups of 5 players. Each group was seeded with higher and lower ranked players from the session. In the second medal round, the players were re-grouped based on their win/loss record from the first round. The top ranked player in each of the medal round group was crowned 'King' or 'Queen' of the court. The unique format afforded the opportunity to play with a wider skill range of players as well as players with similar skill level. Many thanks to Carolann Mickels, Paul Matthewson, Diane Oneill and other helpers for running a full day of fun, competitive pickleball. See Photos and Results on the CSPA Website. |

The new Heritage Park courts are up and running and VERY popular! Thanks to the Facilities and Equipment Committee and their volunteers for putting up wind screens. The feedback is that the screens are very effective in reducing the wind impact. Also, a new equipment box has been installed there which contains a few paddles, a first aid kit, a rain squeegee and a broom. There is a key on a lock box with the same code as the Camano Courts shed. The key opens the equipment box. PLEASE BE SURE TO LOCK BOTH THE EQUIPMENT BOX AND THE KEY BOX WHEN DONE!! |

In other Heritage Park news, a big shout out to the Expansion Committee, especially Gordy Holmes and Stephen Moore, for running a number of introductory pickleball sessions for new players. This increases interest in both the sport and the club. More sessions are planned for Spring 2024. |

Changes are coming to the Saturday Round Robin activities held at the Camano Courts. These games will no longer be DUPR-rated and reported. Instead, players can use self-ratings. Players are encouraged to self rate at the level where they are competitive. You can still use your DUPR rating (if you have one) as a guide. Also, if you are either winning or loosing the large majority of your Round Robin games, consider modifying your self rating when selecting the Saturday Round Robin session that best fits. The change starts on Saturday, September 9, 2023. |

... about Major League Pickleball's (MLP) Format and Scoring? Unlike traditional pickleball scoring, where a team can only score points when they are on the serving side, MLP uses rally scoring, a point is earned after every rally, whether it was won by the serving or receiving team. However, the first team to reach twenty points reverts back to the traditional format and needs to win by two. Also, in the MLP format, players don't switch between the left and right sides of their court. Many local players are finding MLP to be a fun format that is starting to be used in some local tournaments, leagues and recreational play.
