Training Skill Spotlight

Work on this skill for the month of February and tag us in your progress video!

The 'down' command (not to be confused with 'off') is one of the most basic dog obedience lessons.

There are tons of ways to teach your dog to lie down, so here's just one for you to try:

  1. Start with your dog/puppy in the SIT position, holding a treat in your hand.

  2. Lure your dog into the DOWN position by slowly lowering the treat to the floor straight down in front of them - but don't say DOWN yet!

  3. As soon as their belly hits the floor, mark it ("yes!", clicker, your preference) and reward them by giving the treat.

  4. Reset by tossing a treat away from you to get them out of position.

  5. Repeat!

Once your dog is consistently following the lure, you can start to phase out the treat and add verbal commands. Repeat steps 1-3, but instead of luring with the treat in your hand, use just your hand and only introduce the treat after their belly hits the floor and you use your marker! After a few successful reps luring with an empty hand, start saying DOWN while luring them into position. Remember to keep your sessions short and always end on a positive note. Happy Training!

Troubleshooting Tip:

If the downward lure doesn't work for your dog, try sitting on the ground with your legs out in front with your dog next to and facing the side of your knee. Lift your knees off the ground, keeping your heels down, to create a tunnel. Use the treat in your hand to lure your dog under your legs. They will have to lie down in order to fit under and get their treat!
