A NEW monthly story & thought piece from

Rory McGloin

(January 2023)

Happy New Year friends!

A new year often brings new resolutions, and many of us will create and hopefully manifest plans that we believe will help us become better people.

Resolutions are commonly defined as: a firm decision to do or not to do something.

Here are my 2023 resolutions:

I’m going to communicate more.

And…

I’m going to communicate less.

I figured I would start the year, and the first of my new monthly Rory’s Stories thought pieces, by sharing my personal resolutions with you all.

Since we often find inspiration from each other, let me briefly explain:

Like many of us, I’m on a long-term journey to be the most authentic version of myself. This year, I have resolved to communicate more in an effort to embrace a part of my authenticity.

My rationale is simple. I enjoy communicating and I love all forms, reading, writing, listening, talking, etc. But, sometimes, even for me, it can be overwhelming to press send on my messages. Like many of my friends and clients, I too have a fear of rejection and uncertainty - and it sometimes stands in the way of me sharing my authentic self and ideas with others.

Therefore, one of the ways I’d like to manifest my authenticity (and love for communication) is by pressing send on a few more messages. Specifically, this monthly story & thought piece entitled, Rory’s Stories. The goal is to share some fun stories and communication related thoughts with my friends.

I hope these notes will deliver a smile, ignite an idea, start a conversation, or even prompt a personal reflection. And above all, provide a reminder to my friends and colleagues that I'm thinking of them and hope they are all well.

"But Rory, what about the second resolution, to communicate less?"

Yes. Here's the thought on that one too. As a communication person, I find myself giving lots of feedback to all sorts of people throughout the year (e.g., businesses, colleagues, friends, etc.) Thankfully, I’ve developed a reputation for giving feedback that is honest and insightful and there’s no greater joy for me than helping someone by sharing my insights on communicating effectively.

BUT… with that being said, I’ve also found myself quick to give feedback in situations where it wasn’t exactly requested ... my wife (& business partner) Megan has shared this feedback with me a time or two… In my mind, I think I’m helping in those situations, but my desire to communicate with everyone in all scenarios doesn’t always produce the outcomes I desire. Therefore, to be more authentic to my other core values (e.g., being considerate and self-aware) - I need to improve my decision making of when to communicate and when to keep those ideas to myself until a time when my audience is ready, willing, and able to receive my thoughts!

So here we go, 2023 -  Are you ready?! Did you make any resolutions this year? If so, what are you going to do to bring it to life? What fear or apprehension do you plan to address as you move closer towards your more authentic self?

I hope that by sharing this self-disclosure with you it will help hold me more accountable. So thank you, and if I can help you in any way just let me know.

Also, if you enjoyed hearing from me in this way - awesome!

Or, if you would prefer to never hear from me again (at least via this type of email) go ahead and click unsubscribe at the bottom of the email. No hard feelings - Sometimes communication is best left unsaid - and sometimes it’s best left unheard.

(Rory, Megan, & Mairéad, Dec. 2022.

We hope you had a joyous holiday season.)

From our family to yours, we wish you all the very best in health and happiness as well as the ability to conquer everything that comes your way in the new year.

Sincerely,

Rory

P.S. Storytelling Tip: Did anyone pick up on the use of and, but, therefore (ABT)? No. No idea what I’m talking about? … stay tuned for more (but in the meantime, click the link to watch a short Youtube video that explains why ABT is what you need to make your 2023 stories even better!)
