A resource for teachers and learners, a quote to inspire, and a question to ponder. It really is the little things we do consistently that lead to great outcomes.

How do our brains process speech?

This excellent TED-Ed video lesson by professor of cognitive psychology, Gareth Gaskell is a must-watch for any learner, teacher, or parent.

"The average 20-year-old knows between 27,000 and 52,000 different words. Spoken out loud, most of these words last less than a second. With every word, the brain has a quick decision to make: which of those thousands of options matches the signal? And about 98% of the time, the brain chooses the correct word. How is this possible? Gareth Gaskell digs into the complexities of speech comprehension."

Your Weekly AI

We are only at the beginning of understanding how generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be applied to learning. It's an exciting time to witness and be part of this technological evolution that aims to enhance all aspects of life and learning.

I am actively exploring these resources and am happy to share what I have discovered. The technology often advances faster than we can process how to best use it, so staying abreast of what is happening is critical. The image below of Open AI's recent announcement of Chat GPT 5 illustrates this well. Evidently, there is a whale of a difference! :)

I have found the articles from Brent Warner, professor of ESL at Irvine Valley College in California and tech enthusiast to be interesting and user-friendly. Click here to access Brent's profile and articles on how to leverage technology in language learning and teaching.

Question

How might we leverage technology to support how our marvelous brains process language?

Until next week,
