Maker Faire & Kids' Club

SPECIAL NOTE!  Kids' Club will not take place on Saturday, November 17th due to the Maker Faire.

The Maker Faire is this weekend!  SewGreen@Rochester will be at the Student STEAM Fest on Friday, November 16th and at the Rochester Maker Faire on Saturday, November 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Located at The Rochester Riverside Convention Center, 123 E Main St, Rochester, NY 14604

We'll have six electric and two treadle sewing machines for you to try, which means we'll have room for eight participants at a time!  We'll have beginner projects as well as more advanced hand puppet projects.  There will be a time slot sign up sheet so be sure to stop by, say hi and sign up to sew!

We're Hiring

That's right, we're hiring!  Please read the job description below if you'd like to join the SewGreen@Rochester team!

SewGreen@Rochester, Inc. Part-Time Shop Manager 
SewGreen@Rochester, Inc. will be hiring a part-time shop manager to begin work in December. This candidate should have a love of sewing and/or fiber arts and be committed to the SewGreen dual mission of teaching people of all ages and walks of life the joy of sewing, knitting, crochet and other related fiber work as well as making re-use of donated materials beautiful, appealing and accessible to customers in our retail shop.
Duties will include supervising the day-to-day operation of the store, working with a cash register and reconciling a register drawer, receiving and processing donations, working with the volunteer coordinator and alongside volunteers in order to achieve a high level of customer service. The ability to create and maintain displays which showcase our unique collection of retail goods, and work with the director on store policies and marketing which will benefit the community and increase sales are of particular value. The ideal candidate must enjoy greeting the general public, be comfortable working with children as well as adults, and be an effective communicator. This position will require 3 days per week. The schedule will include 2 Saturdays per month and each month will be scheduled well in advance. There is some flexibility in the schedule. The shop manager will receive 3 paid days off during the first year of service. Unpaid days off are at the director’s discretion. This job has a fair degree of physical activity and the candidate must be able to lift 25 lbs.

Thanksgiving & Green Friday

We will be closing early at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21st and also a reminder that our store will be closed on Thursday, November 22nd for Thanksgiving.  We hope everyone enjoys the holiday!  Join us the following day for our 4th Annual Green Friday on Friday, November 23rd. 

Come and experience a relaxing day with your family making gifts the old-fashioned way. We'll have stations set up with projects appropriate for ages 5 & up from simple woven mug rugs to hand-sewn felt ornaments, crocheted bracelets, or bead animals.  For the more adventurous interested in sewing machines- pillows, small zipper purses or tote bags.  Beverages will be available.  Bring your favorite cookies to share.

Totes

There's a tote bag theme this week for project pictures!  As always, great work on all of your projects and thanks for sending in your photos!

Mads took Josefina's Tote Bag class and made herself this awesome carry all with fabric from Scrappy Land!  It has pockets on the outside and inside.  Great work!  

 

 

Deb made all of these fun tote/gift bags with materials from our shop!  She added a little hand embroidered detail on one of them.  Keep an eye out for classes with Deb in embroidery and other needle craft!

Faith found these circular handles at SewGreen to complete this storage bag she made for a family member.  What a great find!

Easy Crochet Hand Warmers

Keep your hands cozy with a pair of crochet hand warmers!  This pattern is beginner friendly and can be easily adjusted for just the right fit.  Make some for yourself or as a gift!

Sewing Machine 101/201

Make friends with a sewing machine in our shop, or bring yours from home. We will take you through the basics of machine operation and safety, and guide you toward sewing a project.

In Sewing Machine 201, build on the skills you've gained in Sewing Machine 101. Is there a sewing project that interests you, or that you want to complete? How can your newly-gained sewing machine skills help you achieve that goal? This is the place and time to learn!
These classes are great for ages 10 & up (or younger with an adult present).
Prerequisite: Sewing Machine 101

4th Annual Green Friday

Create your own unique mini macramé wall hanging!  You'll learn how to use different types of knotting techniques such as square knots and half hitches, to make your fiber art piece.  Bring any yarn you'd like to work with or use what we have available in Scrappy Land!

Make Do and Mend

Got a worn out zipper?  A hole in your favorite jeans?  A missing button?  A ripped seam?  Bring them in and we'll teach you how to fix all of these and more.  All by yourself!  Come learn basic mending skills with us!

Beautiful Knit Tunics

Tunics are a comfortable, flattering style for any season.  If you have a knit tunic you love, bring it and Peggy Lee will help you make a pattern from it.  If you don't, she will help you to make a tunic.  SewGreen has a good selection of knit fabrics to experiment with including some donated from the designer Mara Hoffman.  If you have a serger, plan on bringing it and Peggy Lee will guide you through using this great tool to complete your tunic.  We do have sergers available to use in the shop.  Let us know if you will be using the shop sergers.  $20 for 2 classes includes knit fabric.

Frame Weaving

Woven wall hangings are popular again!  Learn how weave and create a unique fiber art piece with frame weaving.
Attend all both sessions, or come as you are able. $10/2-hour class.

Handtied Prayer Beads

Did you know that regular contemplative prayer and meditation can change your brain? Researchers are still figuring out how, but the benefits are good! Join us as we use nylon cording to create a couple different varieties of prayer/meditation beads. Suitable for any faith, stringed beads make excellent tools for centering and meditative practices

Learn Continental Knitting

Continental knitting is also known as, German knitting, European knitting, or picking.  You'll learn how to hold the yarn differently, eliminating the yarn over/throwing your hand and arm the way you do for English-style knitting.  Also, because of this you can reduce the strain on your hands and shoulders, and with a shorter distance between your needles and yarn, you can knit a lot faster!

Thank you for your generous donations!  We accept donation deliveries on Tuesdays 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Fridays 11am to 2:00 p.m. and Saturdays 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Remember...

Every Saturday is Scrappy Saturday! Our small scrappy bags stuffed with scraps and rolls of fabric and/or unmarked balls of yarn are only $1 all day (regularly $3 on weekdays). Bring your own grocery-sized tote and stuff it full for only $5 (regularly $10). Stop by and fill a bag this Saturday, and every Saturday!
