FORTE House Partners to Help Community

Last month, Tia Ryans and other members of FORTE House teamed up with Habakkuk's Vision and other organizations to support The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation's annual Get Ready Fest, held in Newark this year. The event provides food, health services, counseling and referrals for people facing financial difficulties. It's also a celebration of community, as dozens of organizations join forces to connect those in need to local resources. In this photo (from left): Tia Ryans,  Executive. Director of FORTE House; NFL star Malcolm Jenkins; His mother, Gwendolyn Jenkins; and  Executive Director of Habakkuk’s Vision, Aisha Babilonia.  Read more here!

Our Friend Ron Pierce Inspires on Video
for his Alma Mater, Rutgers University-Newark

Rutgers University-Newark recently featured their Justice Studies B.A. program in a video that featured our good friend Ron Pierce. The video recounts that the program "was first offered to a select group of students in 2016."  Ron was among them--and the first to earn the degree. He  was also our guest blogger over the summer, recounting his challenges in securing post-incarceration housing. Ron is now a Democracy and Justice Fellow at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. Way to inspire, Ron!

Princeton Students Take on Expungement Related to
Marijuana Convictions

Since 2012, Princeton University has been home to Students for Prison Education, Abolition and Reform (SPEAR). Their mission is "educating, advocating, and agitating against mass incarceration." Recently, a Princeton junior founded an initiative to make sure all who are eligible for expungement due to the legalization of marijuana in New Jersey--or whose records are already expunged--know their status and its implications. We applaud these students for their informed activism and commitment to change. Read about this latest effort as detailed in the campus paper, The Princetonian.
