Today, Tuesday, September 21, 2021, may just be an ordinary weekday to you - so why did we choose this day to launch our first newsletter? Well, in the Chinese Lunar calendar, today is also August 15 (yes, I know, it’s complicated!) and that means it’s one of the most important holidays of the year in Chinese culture – the Mid-autumn Festival.
This special day always falls on a full moon – the harvest moon - and it’s all about respect, love and sharing. And that ties in very nicely with Yocha’s goal to love, believe and share.
The Mid-autumn Festival dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). In those times it was a day to show respect to the Moon God and pray for next year’s harvest. Of course, over these thousand odd years many folk stories and traditions have grown up around the festival. Perhaps the best known of these is the sharing of moon cakes.
Originally thought to have been made as an offering to the Moon God, it’s now a custom to give these unique cakes as gifts to friends, family and acquaintances over the festival period. In this way we show our care, respect and love for those around us. Families gather together under the full moon – a symbol of unity and completeness – and share not only the moon cakes but also the beauty of life.
We at Yocha Studio would also like to share this ancient custom with our friends here, so we’re preparing to introduce this traditional Asian treat to you soon – and why limit something so good to just one time of the year? After all, sharing love should be a year-round habit! Please keep following us for the latest updates on Yocha Studio’s products, ideas and news - and of course the latest info on our soon-to-be store in Uppsala!
Stay tuned and see you soon!
