Greeting fellow Georgians

The festive season, Christmas and the closure of 2020 is upon us. What a year this has been for every Georgian around the world, both young and old. But we have made it to this point and the next step awaits us.

Many of the Old Georgian Union events and activities had to be cancelled as the pandemic took hold. We did manage to have a wonderful gathering at the Athletics Day in the early part of the year with a great turn out. Some of the other school events through the year saw a few OGs showing their support. Thank you to those that where able to support amidst the pandemic protocols. I know the class of 2020 appreciate your encouragement and interest.

We can truly be grateful for all that St George’s has done over the years, in our own lives and in the lives of so many fellow Georgians. Many of these seeds over the years have changed lives around the world and in South Africa and continue to do so.

The seeds planted in our time at the school helped to guide us on the journey of life.

Over the years many seeds we planted during our different times at the school that have helped to grow and shape the young Georgians as the years pass.

In this issue we pull out from the archives some photos of the school play in 1993 (Hack Back) and share some memories from the recently passed Mike (Johnny) Downes time at St Georg’s in 1946/47.

Your stories, memories, comments and suggestions are always very welcomed, so please feel free to get in contact.

Have a blessed season of giving and may 2021 be a safe and prosperous one for all Georgians and their families.

Dave Loughton (OG 1957) contacted the Old Georgian Union office during this year asking about sharing a few Cathedral Choir photos from his time at the school. Unfortunately there are none in the archives from the time that Dave was at SGGS. Read more

1993 School Play - Hackback

A request was made to the Old Georgian Office to share some photos of the school plays. Having gone into the archives quite a few photos, programmes and scripts have been saved over the years.

As the items gets digitised, they will be shared in the OG Newsletter and then on the Old Georgian socials (Facebook and Instagram).

Many will remember the play Hack Back in 1993. With many of the costumes still in the school’s costume room and the original scrips and stage directions. We share the first of many wonderful stage-shows done over the years. Read more

2020 Matric Art Exhibition - Tuesday, 20 October

On Tuesday, 20 October the Matric Art class of 2020 exhibited their work. Many have been working on the pieces for most of the year in lockdown. With the umbrella theme of “hashtag” they stretched their minds to create art that expresses much of what the youth of SGGS feel today.

Thank you to the Old Georgians that came along to support, it was amazing to catch up with some that I have not seen in a while and find out how they are holding up amidst the pandemic.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Aaliyah Begg (OG 2016) @aaliyahbegg on achieving her BSc Biotechnology from UWC (University of the Western Cape)

Please send through your happenings and achievements to share with fellow Georgians. It is great to share all the amazing the things that our amazing alumni are getting up to.

RIP Mike (Johnny) Downes (OG 1951) sadly passed away on Friday, 18 December in Hermanus after a long battle with cancer. He was 86. Mike as many will remember him was a great friend to the school and attended many of the Old Georgian Union function. Mike attended the 170th Celebration dinner joining the vintage table of contemporise form his time at SGGS.

I chatted to Mike during the early part of the lockdown in May, he shared with me that he has enjoyed a long and very happy life; thanks to 62 years of marriage to a wonderful lady, loving children, and not regretting one minute what SGGS has done for him.

Mike started work on his memoires sometime back, he shared the chapter with me of his time at SGGS. It was a wonderful insight to the life and times of a 12-year old in the late 1940s.

Please find a link to the extract from Mike (Johnny) Downes memoires.

Matric Valedictory 2020

With the pandemic having put a hold any many of the traditions around the world and at the school, the Matric Valedictory service and dinner had to be adapted to take into account the pandemic protocols. Taking the meaningful elements and moulding it around the restrictions we where able to bid the class farewell and good luck for their exams in a meaningful and uniquely Georgian way.

With the service being lives streamed, everyone being screened and seated apart and wearing masks the class of 2020 had a send off with a difference. After the service light snacks and drinks where served on Bloemendal House stoop and lawn with a relaxed lounge setup to take in the view of Devils Peak.
