Open letter: Nice to meet you
Hi there, it’s Livia here! I’m not sure if you know me, so let me introduce myself: I’m a writer - but still trying to get used to it -, a contributor at GLOOW and passionate about sustainable fashion. I love nature, winter and dogs. Also, I’m writing to you from Spain, more specifically from sunny Valencia. Considering that here, autumn is coming, let’s get cozy, shall we?
I’ve loved fashion since I was a kid. I used to spend the weekends at my aunt’s house and was always putting on her shoes that, as you can imagine, were huge on me. I remember looking at the mirror and feeling so grown up and smart. I liked feeling that way even though I was just a 6 years old child. When I was around 11, I used to spend most of my afternoons watching What Not To Wear with excitement and I was determined to become a Personal Stylist or an Image Consultant. Some years later, I discovered why I liked fashion so much: our clothes are a representation of who we are and how we want to be perceived. They tell stories about us, reveal social rules from different societies and have the power to separate us in different groups. Fashion is one of the ways we found to express ourselves while existing in this world.
If you think about fashion from that perspective, you will understand that each garment we buy should be as special and unique as we are, so we shouldn't be spending our money on pieces that will make us look all the same, that are toxic to our body and that warm the planet and other people. We should be more conscious about what we wear and how our decisions can put our lives in danger. Yeah, believe it or not, we are all in danger of extinction right now.
As someone who loves fashion and sustainability, I understand we must act now so we can keep expressing our individuality in the future. We need more people with collective purposes that will help us shift our reality from complete apathy to what surrounds us to empathy with other human and non-human beings. We need people working on technologies that will improve clothes materials, optimize industrial waste, reduce gas emissions, etc. We need innovation led by conscience. We need a revolution in fashion and all industries so our future can be bright.
Are you in? Let’s do it together?
