Take a Look Inside:

Understanding Your Love Style: Insights from "How We Love"

Destiny Williams, LCSW-S

Love styles are patterns of relating to others, shaped by early life experiences and interactions with caregivers. These styles influence how we express love, respond to intimacy, and handle conflict in relationships.

Understanding your love style offers deeper insights into your behavior and that of your loved ones, paving the way for healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

1. The Avoider
Values independence, prefers emotional distance, and often downplays the importance of emotions.

2. The Pleaser

Focuses on keeping others happy, avoids conflict, and is highly attuned to others' needs and emotions.

3. The Vacillator

Experiences intense emotions, has high expectations for relationships, and may feel easily disappointed or abandoned.

 4. The Controller

Seeks to maintain control in relationships to avoid feelings of vulnerability and powerlessness, often using intimidation, anger, or manipulation.

 5. The Victim

Feels powerless, submits to others to avoid conflict or further harm, and often struggles with self-worth.

Now that you have identified your love style, here are some tips to help address challenges:

 Avoiders can work on opening up emotionally and expressing their needs.

Practice sharing how you feel with a safe person who will listen and not judge.

 Pleasers can focus on setting healthy boundaries and prioritizing their own needs.

Practice saying the magic word of ‘No’.

 Vacillators Work on emotional stability and trust-building. When experiencing judgmental

thoughts about loved ones, add “just like me” to foster empathy.

 Controllers Acknowledge your need for control and learn to manage your emotional

responses through techniques like mindfulness.

 Victims Build self-esteem and assertiveness by using “I” statements to express your feelings

and needs. Start small by practicing assertiveness in everyday situations.

Understanding and working on your love style can greatly enhance your relationships.

Remember, change takes time and effort, so be patient with yourself.

For deeper exploration, join Selene Byrne for the "Love Connections: Relationship Workshops for All Relationships" starting September 5th.
