Meet Our Team: Julia Lykke Sørensen, our representative in Hamburg, is making waves at the Maritime Stiftung as a sail trainer and nautical professional. After a recent podcast and discussions about future possibilities, we're seeing our visions come to life. Julia and Peggy both sailed in the winter season, and we just convened at our Hub in Amsterdam, thanks to the gracious hospitality of Kaap Kargo at the wheelhouse of the ferry. 🌍 Sustainable Cargo Sailing: Fostering Community and Leisure toward a Greener Future Last week, Alexander Grit presented our latest research at the ATLAS Association conference held at Breda University of Applied Sciences. Our paper explores the transformative potential of combining sustainable cargo sailing, community engagement, and leisure to address pressing environmental challenges. Leisure and Activism: We discovered that leisure, characterized by relaxation and recreation, can also be a powerful tool for social transformation when integrated with activism. This unique synergy promotes community engagement, challenges oppressive systems, and fosters a sense of belonging and collective action.
Community Involvement: The success of sustainable cargo ships relies heavily on community involvement. Our research highlights diverse roles within this movement, from crew members and trainees to local supporters, all playing important parts. Proactive communication and positive affirmation are key strategies to enhance this engagement.
Methodology and Future Research: Our multi-method approach includes literature review, applied philosophy, and participatory research. Inspirational Example: Fairtransport Shipping & Trading BV's Tres Hombres: A trans-Atlantic sailing freighter without a motor, epitomizing sustainable sea transport. Bruno Latour’s Influence: Drawing inspiration from Bruno Latour, who advocates for a new attachment to the Earth, we emphasize the importance of strong, meaningful bonds with nature. Sustainable cargo sailing operators aim to create these bonds, inviting a broad audience to join their mission. Mariana Mazzucato’s Vision: Our work aligns with Mariana Mazzucato's vision of mission-oriented innovation, addressing grand challenges through collaborative efforts and systemic change. Her emphasis on rethinking value and public purpose resonates with the objectives of sustainable cargo sailing. Leisure as a Movement: We also explore how leisure activities can lead to new forms of togetherness and sustainable futures.
Conclusion Having Alexander present our research at the ATLAS conference was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the potential of sustainable cargo sailing as a response to the unsustainable practices of contemporary shipping. This movement (and a.o. the new more technological developments such as wind assisted ship propulsion) offer sustainable alternatives, raises awareness for climate-friendly transportation, and provides unique travel and leisure experiences. By merging activism with community engagement, significant positive changes can be achieved, fostering community involvement and promoting social transformation. Together, we can chart a course toward a more sustainable and inclusive future. 🌊💚 #Sustainability #CargoSailing #Activism #Community #Leisure #EcoFriendly #Research #Innovation #ClimateChange #SustainableLiving #EnvironmentalAwareness #FairWind #FairWindSCollective Picture: by Maaike at the ATLAS Conference, Alexander |
