Weaving the Camp

Abstract

Chapter 6 turns to the camp’s material fabric, and explores people’s handling, placing and use of social goods. By concentrating on the aspects of mapping, agriculture, construction, and how the physical experience of refugees differs from the planned physical outlines of the camp will be revealed. Despite structural constraints, thus chapter shows how refugees (re)arrange Kyaka II according to their own needs, e.g. through the repetitive use of goods or the always-same path to walk along, In contrast to a camps’ temporariness, they produce permanent linkages and physically establish the camp, In effect, they produce permanent linkages – in contrast to the camp’s assumed temporariness.
