Recently, I drove 5 hours from my home to a remote town, then 20 minutes over a rocky dirt road, and up a mountain to officiate a stunning wedding of two wonderful rock-climbing enthusiasts. A week later, we would renew their vows in among family and friends setting their foundation firmly on love. Love of one another, love of the natural world around them, love of sacred community. This week in the practice of the counting of the Omer, we are considering the foundation upon which we build our lives. Is it built on resentments, distrust, or fear? Or, are we building our lives on gratitude, intentionality, and love? This is the week to delve deep within to contemplate the roots of all of our actions. To consider what lies beneath the surface, and within our hearts. What motivates our action in this world? In his work, Duties of the Heart, 800 years ago Spanish Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda encouraged us to set our spiritual intentions, our foundation, on what is good and lasting. Rabbi Pakuda notes several now-famous biblical passages that would encourage forming life based on love: - Deut. 6:5-6: "you shall love the Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might; And these words, which I command you this day, shall be on your heart...so that you may love the Adonai your God, and that you may hearken to [God's] voice, and that you may cling to [God]."
- Deut. 30:20: "love Adonai your God and to serve [God] with all your heart and with all your soul."
- Deut. 13:5: "you shall love your fellow as yourself"
- Deut. 10:12: "love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt"
- Deut. 10:19: "reverence for God and love for [God] are among the duties of the heart."
Rabbi Pakuda concludes: “Since the hinge and pillar of all deeds rests on the foundation of intention and hidden sentiment of the heart, a system of duties of the heart should precede, by nature, a system of duties of the limbs.” (Trans. adapted from Rabbi Yossi Sebag, 2017 via Sefaria.org) Essentially, he is encouraging us to be exceedingly sure that we set our intentions on goodness and love well before we begin to take action in the world. In this way, we rest all that we do in the world on the foundation rock of gratitude to the Creator for all of Creation, and save ourselves from impermanent, perishable activities that vanish when we do. When we start on a foundation of love, we build a legacy that inspires and finds a foothold in the fabric of Eternity. This is what we mean when we name God our Rock and Redeemer. This week, may we each find time to delve inward to consider what is inside motivating us, and may we build from love. Together, we’re #keepingitsacred… Rabbi Heather Miller, Founder, Keeping It Sacred |

COUNTING OF THE OMER: REFLECTION ON LAG B'OMER |
|
|
The Jewish community around the world continues the practice of the counting of the Omer. This past week, we reached the holiday of lag b’omer which is the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer. A day when we light bonfires to remember the light that was snuffed out of the world when Rabbi Akiva’s students died. Torah is said to illuminate and is black fire written on white fire. But here’s the thing about fire- balance and temperance is necessary. Because untamed, fire can scorch and destroy. Like Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai and his son who studied Torah in a cave for 14 years as they hid from Roman authorities who would kill them for studying Torah. When they emerged, they burned everyone up with their eyes- eyes that would judge and condemn those around them. Their Torah was too hot. Too unforgiving. Too fundamentalist. So what happens next? God comes down and orders them to go back to the cave to study some more to come out more balanced. To have cooler heads essentially. On this Lag B’Omer, may we always remember to illuminate and not burn. TORAH OF THE HEART: MAKING LITURGICAL LOVE TANGIBLE |
|
|
JUNE 13TH! Join us for Torah of the Heart! Our newest teachings by guest Rabbis every other Monday in May and June. June 13, Rabbi Dr. N. Siritsky teaches Creating Welcoming Communities. Join Rabbi Siritsky to think about how to build welcoming communities, especially for interfaith, LGBT, Jews of color, disabled, and communities beyond. A second-generation Holocaust survivor, Rabbi Siritsky's rabbinate has long been dedicated to "keruv" - an unwavering commitment to advocacy for 2SLGBTQIA+ and interfaith families and the creation of inclusive Jewish communities that are unconditionally welcoming of all spiritual seekers, regardless of their religious background, relationship status, identity, or Hebrew-speaking ability.
Originally from Montreal, Canada, Rabbi Dr. N. Siritsky studied in Jerusalem at several Orthodox yeshivas, prior to beginning their studies as a Reform rabbi at Hebrew Union College. For Rabbi Siritsky, studying Judaism from traditional perspectives was crucial because “it was important to understand what we are reforming”. Rabbi Siritsky believes in making educated choices from the rich set of resources provided by Jewish tradition, in order to ensure that every ritual and prayer is meaningful. In addition to nearly a decade working in synagogues, teaching, counseling and participating in life cycle events, they are also trained as an interfaith chaplain and worked with the American Red Cross after 9/11, providing counseling and support at the family assistance center, Ground Zero, and the morgue. Most recently, Rabbi Siritsky works as a social worker and therapist, as well as serving as the rabbi of an emerging Reform Jewish community in Atlantic Canada. June 13th at 10am PT/1pm ET.
