Happy New Year! We would like to say THANK YOU to everyone for their continued support of our mission and values, we could not do what we do without all your support. |

It is our mission to empower people with all disabilities by providing resources, options, and disability-related services needed to obtain individual freedom in their lives. In order to meet our mission, we rely on the generosity of individuals and businesses. Without the support of the community-minded individuals like you, we would not be able to serve those in our community each year. With the ongoing pandemic, we have not been able to hold our annual Wheelchair Basketball Tournament the past two years; this tournament was our most successful fundraiser each year. We have brainstormed to come up with a few ‘socially distant’ fundraisers to hold throughout the year so individuals can live independently in their own homes. We are starting 2022 off with an online fruit sale. We have partnered with Florida Indian River Groves to provide you with the freshest fruit available. Your fruit will be harvested the very same day it's shipped, ensuring that you receive fruit that is hours off the tree. You can check out what is available by clicking the picture "Support our annual fruit sale!" Follow our social media pages for more ways you can give the gift of independence all throughout the year. We appreciate your continued support! |

This past year, our Nursing Home Transition (NHT) team continued to struggle with some of the lingering barriers of the previous year, along with a few new barriers. As nursing facilities began to open up, more NHT staff were able to complete more in-person visits and build better connections with the individuals they are serving. Although some telephonic work continues to take place, the majority of work has returned to as much in-person as we can. Housing began to slowly open up which allowed us to transition even more participants back into the community than the previous year. However, the biggest barrier NHT has faced has been the lack of available Personal Assistant Services (PAS) for the participants who are ready to transition to the community. NHT staff have continued to think 'outside the box' for shopping as many furniture stores have continued to be delayed in receiving their merchandise or being able to make deliveries due to being short-staffed. Even though materials needed to complete home modifications continue to be an issue, home modification completions have seemed to speed up and we are now seeing them being completed in a more timely manner. |

In 2021, RTFCIL was able to expand the counties they serve for NHT to a total of 36 counties. RTFCIL’s NHT program shows continued commitment to helping as many individuals live independently in the community as possible. A total of 75 individuals gained their freedom by transitioning to their own homes between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021. Compared to the 50 transitions we did in 2020, this is a remarkable increase. |
RTFCIL’s NHT program has been advocating with the Managed-Care Organizations (MCO) to look at how we can assist additional populations that may not qualify for the NHT program through the MCO eligibility requirements. RTFCIL has been educating and advocating with the state and federal legislation to increase funding for Home and Community-based Services (HCBS) so more individuals can be reached and set free from the confined living of a nursing facility to receive better care in the comfort of their own homes and live as independently as possible. |

Due to health problems, one individual had trouble managing his finances. So much so, he had an overdrawn bank account and credit card debt. Lester knew it was time to make a change and he came to us for help. During the two years Roads to Freedom has been his Rep. Payee, he has paid back the bank and saved money while also paying off his credit card debts. Lester understands the role of a Representative Payee and works together with us as a team. Lester sends us his bills and lets us know special requests he has by writing letters. He seals the letter with a wax seal and the initial of his last name. |

Ben began volunteering at Clyde Peeling's Reptiland in October 2021. His current duties include cleaning animal habitats, cages and aquariums and working in the parakeet building. He has cleaned cages and habitats for geckos, iguanas, snakes, mice, rats, birds and for Rodney, the Kinkajou who is only on display for two nights during the live shows at the Flashlight Safari. |
He has also assisted in making the feed sticks for visitors to purchase in the parakeet building, carved a pumpkin for their Flashlight Safari in October, performed various custodial duties, and has given enrichment items to some of the animals to play with. When working in the parakeet building, he tells visitors the rules for being in the building, sells feed sticks that people can hold in hopes that a parakeet will land on it to have a snack, and shares some facts about parakeets with the visitors. Ben hopes to be able to work in the dinosaur area once the weather gets warmer as dinosaurs are one of Ben’s special interests. |
