HUB NEWS

What is happening at SADiLaR

We have reached the second part of the year. Schedules are getting full with online conferences, workshops, colloquiums along with project deadlines, PhDs and other obligations. The country is also in a level 4 lockdown and some of us have been hit hard by the corona pandemic. The thought of working from home is now the new reality and the challenge of adapting to these circumstances have been addressed.

Although members of the SADiLaR hub is located all over South Africa, the team is working hard to drive the centre as a research infrastructure that will enhance innovation in the domains of humanities and social science. The team has received an information session from The Carpentries on how they function as a team working from across the globe. The session inspired the movement to improve our communication channels, adapt to new platforms of storing documents and with that keep our RICH+T principles at the heart of our operations. The Escalator project has launched two tracks, the Empower and Explorer tracks, and the involvement from hub members are greatly appreciated.

May all of you have a blessed month.  I hope that all will experience good health in the time to come.

To those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, our sincerest condolences. May you find peace and strength in this time.

Warm regards

Liané van den Bergh

The Empower Track

To kick start this track, Escalator will as part of women's month (August) host a series of talks by women who are involved in tech communities and women who are currently using various forms of digital and computational skills in their own research and teaching.

A second series will be run during March 2022 to coincide with International Women's Day.

The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session where audience members will be able to speak to the presenters and other community members about the topic.

Blog

Rooweither Mabuya wrote a blog for the Escalator project on training at the CODATA-RDA School of Research and Data Science.

On 3 May 2021 the CODATA-RDA School of Research Data Science – South Africa online edition kicked off. The curriculum is presented as ten different themes which run for 10 weeks. The summer school is providing early career African researchers (M-level to postdoc) and professionals with foundational data science skills. It includes technical skills and responsible research practices. This enables them to work with their data in an effective and efficient manner.
