As we recently learned from Sr. Inez's diary, even the Sisters faced unexpected challenges -- such as the "French leave" of one very determined student.
In May 1951, Sr. Inez wrote:
"At the Sunday afternoon Guild meeting, the school was presented with a check for $3,000.34 by Mr. and Mrs. Paul McCue from the Sportsman's Club, the result of the 9th race.
Just prior to the meeting, John Scanlan who had taken French leave from the school at noon was returned by the County Police. He was picked up at 143rd on Highway 45. He gave his reason for running away that the school was too far from his home. John was minus his shoes when he returned, he had taken them off when his feet began to ache from hiking and left them somewhere along the road. His feet and stockings looked pitiful; the former were bleeding and the latter were soleless. Quite a few angels must have been on the highway protecting John, since the road is a particularly busy one and John was constantly being side-swiped by cars."
