Did you know that a Hanukkah menorah isn't kosher (ritually fit for use) if it's candle holders are separated? So, no matter what yours looks like, a defining feature of the hanukkiah (as it is technically called) is its base, connecting one candle holder to the next. From this, we learn that the lights have to be connected to transmit the hope, light, faith and joy of the season. Each night of Hanukkah, which began last night, we add another light and another light to the table. And in doing so, we connect light to light. This is why this holiday is known as Chag HaUrim-- the Festival of Lights. Each emits light on its own, but together, this is where we really shine. In the days of December leading up to Hanukkah, we shared some of the amazing things our members had to say about this community. How it is a place of acceptance, belonging, warmth, and love. How it is a place we love! (read more below). But why is it this way? Because each of you, each of us, are bringing our light to the table. As if bringing our light to the menorah this season. Magnifying all of the best parts of being human and living in connection with others around the world. And, this season, we have something else to celebrate. Keeping It Sacred is now officially bringing our light to the menorah of the Union for Reform Judaism (urj.org). That's right! We have now been accepted as the URJ's newest member community! If you are unfamiliar with the Union for Reform Judaism, the national organization that unifies the Reform Jewish movement, the president, Rabbi Rick Jacobs, shares, "Our Judaism is for everyone. It is egalitarian, intellectually rigorous, joyful, spiritual, pluralistic, and constantly evolving. It is soul-elevating spiritual practice, life-altering Torah study, courageous practice of tikkun olam, loving care for our community, especially the most vulnerable — that is what we are." As you can see, this mission really aligns with our own. And with our admission to the URJ, we can share all of the great ways we are creating a community of care, meaning, and spiritual wellness with other member congregations and communities. We can shine our light among colleagues in an international community. In return, we can connect over resources, best practices, and partnerships with those who are also committed to this kind of progressive Judaism. As individuals, and as a community, we are committed to sharing our light with the world. Keep shining! This is how we are #keepingitsacred… Rabbi Heather Miller

December 21st is recognized as the National Homeless Persons' Memorial day. It takes place on The Winter Solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere sinks into its deepest point of darkness creating the longest night of the year. Please join us at 7pm PT/ 10pm ET to honor our lost neighbors with a candlelight memorial which includes interfaith prayers and verses, sacred and secular music and the reading of their names. This interfaith memorial is dedicated to those who died in Orange County, CA. without a permanent, safe or secure place to call home. This may be the only memorial that these brothers and sisters will receive. As we honor these neighbors, we cannot ignore the fact that their deaths, on our Orange County streets, emergency shelters and local hospitals were all too often the direct result of the lack of adequate housing, safety and security, food, and health care. We commit ourselves to raising public awareness about the plight of the homeless. MAZAL TOV TO ALI & JASON! |
The entire Keeping It Sacred community wishes a hearty MAZAL TOV to Ali and Jason who recently stood under the chuppah in their sacred place, Palm Springs, CA. Rabbi Miller spoke about the dreidel inscription which affirms, "A great miracle happened there." A great miracle certainly did happen there under the chuppah! Plus Beyoncé was referenced not once but TWICE, and, the Minnesota Vikings earned a history-making win, so it was truly the BEST DAY EVER! MAZAL TOV to the happy couple! |

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition! What people say: "Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!" "Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all." "The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it." "We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way." "I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."
