SPOTLIGHT on The SPLATCH Instead of a person this month, we're spotlighting the most asked question at the brewery: What is SPLATCH? |

SPLATCH brewing is the process in which two beers are brewed from the same initial grain bill (SPLATCH = Split Batch). We take the same grains and steep them in our Mash Tun which creates the sugary wort, basically a Barley Tea, which we transfer into our two different boil kettles. Once the wort is in the two kettles this is where they begin to become different beers. Depending on the recipe we will have different hops or other items such as Belgian Candi sugar. After the wort is boiled we transfer it into our Fermenters cooling the wort through our heat exchanger. In the Fermenters, we will add different yeasts and this is where the wort will turn into beer through fermentation. SPLATCH doesn’t mean you’re getting a slight variation of the same beer. For example, Tannery Run brews a SPLATCH with a German Style Pilsner and a Belgian Style Tripel. Two significantly different beers, coming from the same initial grain bill. |
