This is not the monthly newsletter which will be sent out next Monday 8/14, but just announcements, mostly about our club involvement in the Evergreen State Fair, Monroe, WA, 8/24-8/29, 8/31-9/4 (Labor Day). If you close enough to attend, we hope to see you there. If you are farther away, we hope you have as much fun at your fair as we do at ours. |

EVERGREEN STATE FAIR In addition to being our biggest social event of the year and perhaps the biggest annual beekeeper social event in Western WA, the fair is the easiest way for anyone with the Apprentice certificate to earn up to half the Journeyman Service Credits required for WASBA certification. The 17 ½ maximum service credits for a single category of service could by covered by 9 shifts during the 11 days of the fair. You can start the service part of the Journeyman certification process before taking the academic portion. By the way, the next academic class starts the week after the fair ends, on Monday, Sept. 11. In addition to service credit, each 4-hour shift earns you a one-day admission ticket for any age or day of the fair and a parking pass. The Daily Schedule link below may help you decide what days you want to attend the fair. The club canopy will be larger, so more shade! We are scheduling 3 volunteers per shift, so more company! |

DRAWING for fair volunteers and members whose 2023-2024 dues are paid by Nov. 10th: This year for every 4-hour shift you do at the fair you also get an entry into the drawing for the 2 grand prizes pictured above – handcrafted bee themed quilt or a Mann Lake donated single deep hive with solid bottom and inner and outer covers -- and additional prizes including bee-themed birdhouse or napkin holder crafted by Walt and beekeeping books donated by Dadant. Winners get to pick their prize in the order in which their names are drawn. We will mail the quilt or books but for the other items will need to arrange pick up at a club apiary or some other mutually convenient location. Also, any member paying 2023-2023 dues by November 10th receives an additional chance to win a prize. |

T-SHIRTS & STENCILS If you do 2 shifts, you get a t-shirt with the 2023 logos Becky Glaze designed and has volunteered to print. Pictures of logos above. LOCAL HONEY member list: SnoKing is asked at every fair for contact info for local honey. At the fair, we will post a list of members who sell their local honey, and after honeys offered for sale. Note: We are providing this service to individual members and small scale beekeepers, not to brick and mortar stores that can be easily found. However, if that larger store or concern is the only venue by which a beekeeper sells his/her honey, a beekeeper may list his/her honey description here and refer buyers to that reseller for sales. |
|
|
To be added to the list, email eliochel@snokingbka.org with as much of the following information as you wish to offer: Product: honey, wax, pollen, other Type of honey: extracted, comb, creamed, chunk Variety – wildflower if unknown Preferred contact: your website, text or phone #, email Point of sale: Farmers’ market, honor box, pickup at address, or call for address or sales location Feel free to add colorful descriptive text about what makes your products special. We will do our best to include it but we reserve the right to correct grammar and spelling or trim ads down to a reasonable size as needed. |

TROPHALLAXIS - a JOURNEYMAN level discussion and networking group SnoKing Beekeepers will start an online Journeyman level discussion group/club this fall. Interested beekeepers in Western WA – Journeyman candidates, Journeymen or Masters – will be invited to an organizational meeting on Zoom in September, time and date to be announced. We are looking for a venue to encourage beekeeper communication, education and networking after completion of the WASBA Beginner and Apprentice level. The topic of the first meeting will be the desired format for such a group. Possibilities include a Facebook group, a website forum/blog allowing members to start posts, comment and share profile information, use of online chat session software similar to zoom, or continuing with regular Zoom meetings. Please watch for a time and date for this organizational meeting, and start thinking of how to set up and maintain communication for such a group. Ideas are welcome! Email eliochel@snokingbka.org if you have suggestions or questions. |

The mission of the SKBA, a 501c3 member club of WASBA, is to provide educational opportunities, networking and support to beekeepers and people interested in honey bees, particularly those involved in small-scale beekeeping in Washington State west of the Cascades. |
