Meet Audrey, Kimmy and Lynn – ACC’s Newest Members by Kate Hand I’ve been with Adams Creek Cohousing for almost 4 years now, and one of my favorite things about this community is that it keeps attracting awesome people. Our newest members are no exception. |

Audrey Flint will be moving to Hood River from Talent, Oregon, where, over the course of 18 years, she almost singlehandedly built a theatre and dance program in the local school that grew from a single class to a huge vibrant program with hundreds of kids involved every year, and lots of kids on waiting lists to get in. In her “retirement,” Audrey currently teaches 5 different “Broadway for Boomers” dance classes on Zoom for seniors, and she’s excited about returning to live teaching in the fall. She finds that she often creates a sense of community among her dancers, and a real, live-in community is something Audrey has longed for ever since she experienced it in the Summerhill-type private school community her parents created in rural northern California when Audrey was a girl. She feels like she’s finally found the community she’s been looking for with ACC. Audrey shopped quite a bit for the right cohousing community, and in the process became familiar with our other two new members, Kimmy Waldman and Lynn Gilman, when all three women were in the process of checking out a different cohousing community in Washington awhile back. But like me, they fell in love with the cool and kind folks of ACC, and are also drawn to the beauty of living in the Columbia River Gorge. I asked Audrey to tell me a recipe of hers that she’s looking forward to scaling up to feed the ACC crowd: Coconut Curried Yam Soup with Ginger. Oh yes. |

Kimmy Waldman and Lynn Gilman have lived in Whitefish, Montana for the past 10 years, helping Lynn’s son raise his two boys after their mother died. Now those boys are finally leaving the nest, and Kimmy and Lynn, after 31 years together, are ready for the next chapter of their lives. They met at a workshop on trauma at Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle, where Kimmy was working as a nurse, and Lynn was attending as a psychotherapist. Kimmy knows something about trauma, as she was badly burned on 55% of her body at the age of three, and her relationship with the wise and loving Lynn has been instrumental in helping her heal from that trauma, as it wasn’t something she was allowed to talk about while growing up. Kimmy is a wonderful artist, and Lynn is an accomplished cook, and together they are a delight to hang out with. Kimmy is currently working as a nurse at a veterans hospital, and Lynn still has several psychotherapy patients that she sees on Zoom, but she mostly considers herself retired. They laughingly refer to themselves as “hippies,” and both love to relax and listen to artists like The Beatles and Pink Floyd. Kimmy has been longing to find a community to be part of, since living on a Kibbutz in Israel when she was 18, and says she’s been considering living in a community for decades. Lynn was resistant to the idea at first, but since Kimmy moved to Whitefish for Lynn’s sake, Lynn felt she owed it to Kimmy to have their next move be Kimmy’s choice. Now, after making warm connections with some of the folks at Adams Creek, Lynn finds it much easier to embrace the idea of cohousing, and the two of them are very jazzed about being part of a community where folks feel comfortable with each other, and share meals and gardening and group projects. Lynn said she’s looking forward to, and at the same time a bit frightened of, a big group of new people, as she considers herself an introvert at heart. Kimmy’s also an introvert, but I assured them that half the folks at ACC are the same, (my husband included) and that cohousing is perfect for introverts – company when you want it, solitude in your own private space when you don’t. The recipe Kimmy and Lynn plan to scale up for this tribe: White Bean Stew with Fennel. Ummm. Welcome to Adams Creek Cohousing, you three wonderful women! We’re delighted you’ve joined this tribe, and we look forward to knowing you better (and enjoying your cooking!) in the years to come. |
