Hi there!
Recently, I attended the "Visualize the Future" conference hosted by Stanford d. school and High Tech High. In the age of AI, instead of merely preparing students for the future, we need to empower them to "shape the future". In order to do that, today's students will need a variety set of skills that we call "21st century skills". Their learning will shift from knowledge-based and test-oriented toward project/competency-based and real world-oriented, which is the focus of my consulting work for the National RGEP (Renovating General Education project) with the Vietnam Ministry of Education & Training and United Nation's World Bank. I will write a series of posts on the NextGen Facebook page, so please follow us to stay tuned!
As many of you already know, we have launched the NextGen AAPI Biography project Fall 2021 classes. Students will publish their multimedia E-book in the world's first student-made online AAPI Biography library. Please read the updates about this project here. We have also started a NextGen Education Real World & Creative Writing Team! Every month I will pick a few topics from regional/national writing contests which encourage creativity and real world engagement (e.g. climate change). Students will meet on zoom to learn writing techniques and create an outline or draft. They then have the option to either take 1-on-1 private revision workshop(s) with a supervisor or get individualized written feedback if they want to submit their writing to the contests. Please sign up at this link to join our October task force for a national democratic writing contest (Grades 6-12)!
Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important part of whole child development. I have written a post on "Filling the emotional cup". Parents and educators need to have our own emotional cup filled and refilled too! Please see a self-care checklist which I received from a women's leadership network meeting hosted by ACSA and Santa Clara County Office of Education.
All the best,
Jiang Pu, Ph.D.
