What We’re Up To

Note from the Director

September 2021

by Patricia Cream

COVID-19 numbers are up, and masks are back in place for in-door businesses. The Gallery ABQ will be following New Mexico State Guidelines. There will be no changes in daily hours or ARTScrawl Events for September.  Please protect yourself and our artists by wearing your mask.

Summer is quickly passing as September begins. Labor Day is considered the unofficial end of summer. The days are getting a little shorter, but the gallery is not ready for fall yet. Before the fall colors start dropping, we are getting ready for a fabulous September Salon Show. One of our very own gallery artists-- George (Hauie) Hayes, III, will be exhibiting his oil paintings in the show “The Future of the Past” in the salon.  Hauie has an extremely wild imagination that never runs dry.  He is dedicated to letting his imagination grow and does not restrict his thoughts and ideas. The First Friday ARTScrawl Artist Reception will be on Friday, September 3rd, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Tractor Brewing Company will be sponsoring the event, which should be a lot of fun! Come meet the artist and listen to how he comes up with his great ideas!  Hauie’s work will be in the salon through September.

The Featured artists in September are Darlene Moore, Fused Glass, and George (Hauie) Hayes, III, Steampunk. Darlene is fascinated with the unique nature of glass (a liquid/solid). It is an ancient material that transforms for modern expression. She has recently become fascinated with screen printing on glass and enjoys blending a variety of vintage and contemporary imagery with fused glass. Hauie is an original oil painter of subjects from portrait works to florals, surrealism, art fantastic, fantasy, and steampunk. He is a New Mexico self-taught artist, honored with many awards and recognitions in New Mexico.

The Gallery is excited to announce we have selected two new artists starting September 2nd.

Marcos O Reyna, Acrylics

David Marks, Mixed Media

The Future of the Past

                                            by Linda Weiss

The Gallery ABQ is featuring George Hayes III (a.k.a. Hauie) in the salon show “The Future of the Past,” on September 3, 2021 from 5-8:00 pm.  The show is based on Steampunk theory and encompasses fairy tales, folklore, and mythology.

The artist is inspired by anything from the Rococo movement to the Victorian period to art deco.  He was specifically influenced by Maxfield Parrish (known for saturated hues and idealized neo-classical imagery), John William Waterhouse (a hopeless romantic), and Alphonse Mucha (known for his stylized and decorative theatrical posters).  Like Leonardo da Vinci, Hauie puts no limits to thinking about inventions. (Look for his fantastic inventions in his work!)

Hauie works on multiple oil paintings at once, and his pieces take about one to three weeks to complete, depending on the difficulty.  His frames, which are ornate, are done with spray paint and stencils and lots of hand detailing.  The complexity of the artwork inspires awe among his followers.

When asked “What do you like most about your painting style,” Hauie explained, “Expressing yourself with a creation in mind, and experimenting to see what’s going to happen.”

Keep experimenting, Hauie—your work is amazing!
