Welcome to the hertelier email! To our new subscribers, thanks for signing up! It's been a busy week, here's what happened-- - If you've not already, please check out the three-part series with Gilda Perez-Alvarado, Global CEO, JLL Hotels & Hospitality. In her words "It is so important for women to speak up and share their real experiences if we want to achieve gender equality in society and in the workplace. We speak up not just for us, but for the generations to come. It is a 3-part interview of which my favorite one was part 3 when we talked about becoming a working mother."
- Cheers to our new weekly column F&Be! This week we met Melody Wong, Head Sommelier of the newly renovated Carlton Tower Jumeirah in London. She spills the secrets of being a top sommelier, shares her career path, and good wines to buy for summer.
- The Castell Project, Inc. released their latest survey "Women in Hospitality Industry Leadership," no surprise 2020 wasn't a year for progress, but see what chair Peggy Berg thinks are opportunities as the industry builds back post-pandemic.
- When housekeeping consultant Aileen Williamson posted a simple graphic on LinkedIn, she had no idea it would go viral and reach over 75K views. She hit a nerve. Housekeeping is one of the major concerns as hotels reopen, she offers five things to consider.
- This week, advice columnist Nancy Mendelson helps readers unpack how the pandemic has shifted our views on work and life, asking "New Normal...or No Normal"?
hertelier round-up of the week’s interesting articles on the hotel industry: - Loews Hotels CEO, Jonathan Tisch was on CNBC Power Lunch this week, he summed up the state of the industry, his thoughts on vaccinations, and what's next.
- While COVID-19 is, unfortunately, raging in India, the EU announced plans to welcome vaccinated travelers from the US this summer.
- The travel trade headlines continue to be about hotels coping with labor shortages as business ramps up.
- Also on our radar, the Wall Street Journal article "The Workers Who Can’t Commit to a Vacation" (paywall, sorry) which claims that even as vaccination rates climb and more businesses reopen, some workers remain hesitant to use their paid time off, despite how burned out they feel. Remote work has obliterated boundaries; threats to job security weigh heavily on workers in at-risk industries. The result: decreased use of paid time off was ranked as the second-highest talent management challenge by human resources leaders, after caregiving issues for parents, in a survey by Willis Towers Watson. As hoteliers, does this lead us back to offering the "work-cation" concept discussed in previous emails?
We welcome your feedback, concerns, and especially your questions. If you have any questions about your job (or life) send them to Nancy (nancy@nemglobal.com).
