Thanks April. Another month in the bank. April was (again) a big month for nscarbon – among other things; our Founder moved to Dubai in the UAE to keep on expanding the brand, we shared a new story on cycling kit with Prue Fowler and Soomom, and our ‘wheel set up’ add-on became available in our store for those who value max convenience. We’re also preparing to launch our Tri-spoke wheel, a newly designed Solid Disc, and a state of the art (algorithm-run/custom-coded) wheelset selector tool to make choices easier for those wanting to learn about different carbon setups, and finally, we welcome the arrival of our first batch of wheelsets to new customers in Mexico. With Chris Dunn as our Oceania GM now fully onboard and reaching cruising speed, we are better positioned to respond to customer queries, and have found some more breathing room to speeding up the launch of many of the initiatives we have in the pipeline. On the Technical front, we’re putting the spotlight on Vittoria’s road-specific Air Liner foam tire inserts for this month’s newsletter. They launched earlier this month and even though we haven’t been able to put this new setup to the test just yet, we wanted to bring you a brief summary of what this is and leave a couple of open questions for when we do have the opportunity to run some tests. Follow below for a further update on some of the topics for this month. |

Talking about 'finding the aero fit' with Prue and Soomom |
Prue is a multiple national NZ champion and Olympic team contender. Soomom is an Australian cycling apparel company crafting tight aero garments. Prue went on to test the newest Soomom’s prototype aero reflective kit and our NS50 Disc wheelset, and spoke with us about ‘finding the right fit’ – an interview not to be missed for the speed-obsessed. UAE, in more ways than one, is quite the opposite to NZ (figuratively and literally; -8 hours time difference, pretty much on the other side of the world). This means re-thinking market dynamics and adapting to a much different environment. Some of the differences. (NZ vs UAE) Mountains vs Flats (with the exception of Hatta mountains) Mild temperature and rain vs HEAT and more HEAT Ride anytime anywhere vs Ride 5-9am and 5-9pm only in dedicated cycling spots All terrains and roads vs perfectly flat/bike-only roads (dedicated tracks)
UAE and the region are an emerging cycling market, with the government planning to build more than 600K of cycling lanes from now to 2024 and cycling gaining momentum among all types of riders, in part fuelled by the likes of the UAE Emirates Cycling Team or Bahrain Endurance, both having some of the best cyclists (Tadej Pogačar) and triathletes (Jan Frodeno) in the world amongst them. The flat profile, the quality of the roads and the mild temperature in either early mornings or late evenings make just the perfect conditions to capture aerodynamic efficiency with an improved bike fit, clothing and/or components. We’re looking forward to soon participate in the ITT series in Al Qudra and see what nscarbon is capable of! |

This is a service we had been planning to launch for a while. Our goal is to both eliminate the inconvenience (not having the time, the tools, the components or the skill) of having to set up your wheels on your own, and make sure more customers have the optimal setup (the little details that will have an impact on performance, comfort and durability). As with everything nscarbon, this service is in continuous evolution and as people start using it, we’ll make the necessary adjustments to strengthen its proposition, from optionality to pricing. Ultimately, this aligns to our core; making carbon wheelsets more accessible to you. Check out the details: https://www.nscarbon.com/product-page/wheelsetup |

Vittoria road-specific Air Liners tire insert |
What is this? This is a liner foam for tubeless set ups, polygonal shape (effectively round) and about 24 grams for a 25mm tire liner, so 48 grams extra to traditional tubeless set ups. At ambient atmospheric pressure, the foam will fill most of the tire volume, however when the tire is pumped up, it will put pressure on the foam inserts, pushing them down to the rim bead so that essentially the insert will never touch the ground when the wheel is rolling. What are the benefits? Improved cornering traction and better ride comfort without worrying about the tire squirming around or denting a rim due to impact Rolling resistance is not affected when the tire is inflated Increased security if the tire goes flat and can’t be repaired with a plug or sealant Ability to ride up to 50km at 20km/h average speed with a completely flat tire without too much risk of damaging your wheel
Some questions that already come to mind as we prepare for testing How painful and time-consuming is the installation process? Can you remove the inserts with your own hands if you get a flat out in the road? (the tool (provided by Vittoria) required for the installation doesn’t seem like something you could carry on the bike or jersey) What do you do with the inserts if you need to install a tube out in the road?
