Shabbat and Seder

Our second community newsletter

April 8, 2024

Our first Shabbat together!

Rabbi Georgette Kennebrae and the musical team of Linda Kates, Cindy Shapiro, Jack Wall, and David Kates led us in a beautiful, uplifting service last month at the St James Anglican Church's Well House, followed by a delicious kiddush and Oneg of fresh-baked challah, wine, cheese and crackers. Thank you to everyone who attended and who gave us their feedback on our first community Shabbat.

Pot Luck Seder in two weeks!

Please join us for a community pot luck Seder on the first night of Passover, Monday April 22.

The service and meal will be from 6:30-9:30pm in the Well House at St James Anglican Church, Largo da Maternidade de Júlio Dinis 45, 4050-014 Porto.

Enter from the street through the wooden gate, turn right and head to the smaller building behind the church. Parking is available on the grounds.

Seder plates and matzoh ball soup will be provided -- both with gluten and gluten-free matzoh balls. Vegetarian broth is available if requested in advance.

The Seder will be led by Rabbi Georgette and our wonderful musical team, with a special emphasis on the children attending.

The room can seat 60, and spaces are going fast, so if you haven't registered yet, please do. Tickets are 35€ adults, 12€ children 3-13, free under 3.

Tickets cover the cost of venue rental, supplies, and the Rabbi’s fees and travel. Making the Seder pot luck helps keep the cost as low as possible.

Also, please save the dates for these two ticketed events:

  • Havdalah/Lag b’omer picnic on the beach on May 26

  • Friday night Shabbat service with kiddush and Oneg on August 9

We are still aiming to have a full calendar, annual budget, and membership structure in place by the High Holy Days. Once we do, events such as these will be included with membership, with tickets needed only for guests.

Thank you for your understanding and support. Without you, we wouldn't be a community!
