Keep an eye out for THE PHANTOM #1905... Glenn Ford (editor at Frew) gave me the head's up that my last completed Phantom in 'Nam story will be the lead story in the issue due late October/early November. (Currently, issue 1903 with a great Jeremy MacPherson cover sits on the newsstands, so a few weeks away). Completed in 2019, I am happy to see it arrive in print. Will talk a little more about it in the next newsletter. Looks like they went with my back cover for the front cover; I wonder if the coloured front cover (inks on left) is on the back? *hmmm emoji. Below is a random sneak peek.

XCT: Monsters Comic Anthology Kickstarter now live! Only 2 weeks remaining on Comics2Movies's latest comic book kickstarter XCT: Monsters. During early Kid Phantom years of 2017/2018, I juggled a short 10 page comic for editor and creator Shaun Paulet, with script by Christof Bogacs (Scout Comics); the comic introduces the origins of Blackbeard the Pirate into the XCT universe. It's neat to see it making its way into publication, in what looks like to be a fun anthology comic book. Check out the Kickstarter page via the link below, and support Australian comics :D

Good luck Nat! I've pledged here:

Bird of the Month: Rosie the Galah. This Month's Bird (in our inaugural spot here in the Mason Comics Newsletter), is Rosie, the slightly-overweight Galah that lives in our house. Rosie, a rescue bird who came to us several years ago, morbidly obese and in need of surgery to remove budgie-sized fat clusters, is now a happy and only-sometimes-a-bastard drawing/lecturing companion here at home :D
This month's shout out is on the back of her staying up and peacefully watching me draw pages, destroying egg cartons and tissue boxes for fun, and swearing at Tradespeople. Here's to you, you portly, potty-mouthed, pink menace :D |

Almost at the End of Trimester 2, for second and Third Year Animation Students... ....and I'm looking forward to seeing not only the 2107GFS/7107GFS Visual Story pitches and storyboards (all 66 of them...), but also the 3126GFS completed animated films. These days as a sessional staff member, I am supervising one project, but it was great to foster all of them in 3121GFS Pre-production in T1, and I still get two cents during T2 group milestone meetings. The short film I am currently supervising on is such a fun, "stupid" film, with a great team of keen and talented students who just get on with the job. I look forward to seeing the results. It's kind of a love child of Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam meets 2 Stupid Dogs, with a dash of Punisher: War Zone and the Exorcist, if you can imagine that :P Though I've supervised dozens of shorts over the last 5-6 years, here's one of my favourites: The Hunt (2018). Made by a team of talented GFS alumni, under director Olivia Rea, and producer Naomi Hurrey. Dark, brutal, and give me a 'Twilight Zone'-ish vibe that I dig immensely:

Stuck for Christmas ideas? Why not get an Original A3 Commission? Yes folks, I can't remember the last time I dusted off the commission list (maybe pre-convention 2019?). Since I won't be doing conventions for the foreseeable future, and a recent Phantom reader already reached out for a Phantom: Vietnam-based A3 commission I'm currently scribbling, I've decided to open up the books to see if anyone else would like to commission an American-size 11" x 17" comic board (A3 sized, roughly) pencil and/or inked illustration for themselves or loved one this Xmas period. Limited spots available, as I'm still in the throws of teaching until Xmas, and a few comics still on the to-do list; I'd be happy to chat with people to see what they would like. Prices hinge on complexity/figure-size: (head shot, bust/waist up, and Full Figure). I also have a handful of original Phantom sketch covers (Left) for the Budget-conscious too.

Final words for this month: So, still just sitting tight on possible project approval with King Features. If they get up, great! If nothing comes of them, at least I had a fun run. I am pleased that I'm on the verge of completing pencils, inks and flat colours for issue 1 of FLOCK, my first creator-owned title since The Soldier Legacy, and seeing what form that might take in getting it out to the public. Though I intended a 2021 Kickstarter, things still seem in flux overall, plus fair bit on at the Film School between now and Xmas eve. So I figure rather than rushing my own thing, I think realistically a February Kickstarter might be on the cards. I'm on my own deadline for this, and I want to gauge the process and put out a book I hope people will like, and that I'd be happy with too. I hope I can count on your support to back or share, trusted reader! As always, best wishes to you and yours, especially those currently in lockdowns here or abroad, and cheers for keeping on doing the right thing. Even when they open things up, keep safe, be well, and hope we all get through these crazy times OK. We're Vaccinated, A-OK, and hope you're getting sorted too. Chat soon, warm regards, Paul. pmason83@gmail.com
