Our Newsletter - October 4, 2019

Happy October!

October, the temperatures start to drop, the leaves change color and we start to spend more time inside than out. The smell of apple pie and cinnamon come to mind as we cook some of our favorite comfort foods and prepare for the holiday season. Think about SewGreen@Rochester as you plan for your Halloween costumes and fall decorations, homemade gifts and perhaps a dress for a special party. We have lots of rescued fabric, yarn, and embellishments like buttons, ribbon, and trim. And best of all our October calendar is full of some of our most popular classes.

We are also offering a special FREE workshop brought to you by a team of designers at "Experience FiberArt, inc.". You will create a unique work of art using fabric and a photo of your own. Give the shop a call at 585-328-2642 and register for this two-part class that takes place from 5-7:30 on October 10th, and 17th. The end product will make a great gift for someone special. Read on to see some examples from previous classes.

Later in October, on the 26th from 2-4PM we have a special class in the basics of Long Arm Quilting. You will enjoy this class even if purchasing a long arm of your own is out of your budget. This class will be very educational for anyone curious about long arm quilting.

And don’t forget, the first Saturday of every month will be our Quilt Block class, where beginner or experienced sewers will cut, measure, and sew together pieces of fabric to create a quilt square. This Saturday, October 5th you will learn to create the "Whirlwind" square.

Other great classes this month include "Make a Fabric Wallet", Part 2 of our "Working with Dress Forms" boot camp, “Sewing Machine 101/201”,  “Serger 101/201”, and "Hand Embroidery”.

All that just for October!

We are always improving our website. Check it out at sewgreenrochester.org

Experience Fiber Arts, inc.

Special Event

Experience FiberArt, Inc, is a non-profit organization that strives to educate and provide an opportunity for freedom of expression through art using fiber.

A team of instructors from Experience FiberArt will be at SewGreen@Rochester to host a two-part event on October 10th and 17th from 5:00 – 7:30PM.

Bring a photo that holds some meaning. The Experience FiberArt team will discuss how to enhance your photo digitally. Once enhanced, the Fiber Arts team will digitize it onto fabric and bring it back to you for part 2 of the workshop.

You will learn how to work with various types of fabric to design an artistic fabric frame for your digitized photo and a backing for the end product, which is a pillow.

See the examples in the picture above that show both fronts and backs of three example pillows created in this class.

A Fabulous Orange Dress

Kendall is modeling this fabulous orange dress she made from, as she puts it, "fantastic polyester fabric from the shop". She sent us lots of love along with her pictures, and we accept the love and wanted to share it with all of our readers. It is amazing to see this sort of fabric come back to life with the right pattern and dress maker! Thanks Kendall, we look forward to seeing more!

A Vintage Apron Pattern

Linda, one of our volunteers, made this vintage apron using a vintage Simplicity pattern and fabric purchased at our shop. Notice the rick-rack trim along the neckline and pocket. The contrasting color on the pocket looks great, the picture doesn't do it justice. What a great idea Linda!

This will make a nice gift, for someone else, or for yourself.

Come check out our great selection of patterns – only $.10 per pattern!

Crochet Pumpkins

These crochet pumpkins are easy to make with a little scrappy yarn. Anne made the trio and the multi-colored pumpkin on the left, and Deb made the ones on the right. Change the size of the hook and type or color of yarn to create a fun and festive pumpkin. Stop in for Crochet Club on either Wednesday or Friday this month and create a little pumpkin for yourself.
