Feature ArticleWhat is a Task Analysis? A 'not so science-y' approach to behavior |
Sometimes learners try to complete a complex task and become frustrated if they cannot. A natural reaction would be completing the task for them to avoid a meltdown. Later down the line, the child will continue requesting assistance, or they may find themselves needing to complete this task when no one is available to do it. |
This is where an ABA concept called a task analysis becomes very important. A task analysis is used to promote learner independence. The purpose of a task analysis is to create a sequence of steps that lead to completing a task. A task analysis breaks one large task into smaller, teachable, chunks. Each smaller chunk then becomes a goal for the learner to master before moving onto the next smaller goal. Once all the small goals are mastered the learner should have all the skills needed to perform the larger task. Task analyses are seen everywhere, for everyone, in various forms. There is no right form to teach these skills. What form of task analysis’ learners use to master these skills depends on what type of learner they are. How intricate a task analysis depends on “age, skill level and prior experience” (Cooper, Heward & Heron, 2017). |
