WELCOME TO RAFEIF! Rafeif Ismail has joined the YACWA team as the new MYAN WA Project Officer. Rafeif will be supporting the MYAN WA while usual Project Officer, Tamkin Essa, spearheads a new project with MYAN WA. Rafeif is a refugee and third culture youth of the Sudanese diaspora. She is a student and an emerging multilingual writer.Rafeif was also the winner of the 2017 Deborah Cass Prize for Writing, The 2018 Convocation of UWA Graduates Bryant Stokes Matilda Award for Cultural Excellence (Literature) and a finalist for the 2018 WA Youth Awards, Cultural Endeavours category. Multicultural Enterprise Development Project The Multicultural Enterprise Development Project (MED) is a joint initiative of the Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre and Multicultural Futures funded by the Try, Test, Learn Fund Australian Government initiative. The project's aim is to improve employment outcomes for people of migrant and refugee backgrounds by engaging in business activities through two streams of training. The Collective Enterprise Incubator stream provides culturally-competent business training and individualised support to help build skills, knowledge and confidence while gaining work experience in running an enterprise. The Individual Enterprise Accelerator stream provides access and support to participate in the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS). Jobactive: failing those it is intended to serve A recent parliamentary report on Jobactive: failing those it is intended to serve has been released. The inquiry focussed on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the objectives, design, implementation and evaluation of Jobactive. This report includes evidence provided by MYAN, with MYAN Youth Ambassador, Narayan Khanal and Andrew Cummings, MYAN's Acting National Coordinator, appearing before the Senate Inquiry into Jobactive to speak about the need for targeted and specialised support to get young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds into meaningful employment. |

Australia's 2019-20 Migration Program discussion paper MYAN recently made a submission to the Department of Home Affairs on Australia's 2019-2020 Migration Program discussion paper. This submission provides a national perspective, drawing on the MYAN’s breadth of experience working with young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds, their communities and the youth and settlement sectors across Australia. It has a focus on the rights and interests of young people (12 to 24 year olds) from refugee and migrant backgrounds in the Australian Migration and Humanitarian Programs. |

Queer Displacements: Sexuality, Migration and Exile Questions of sexuality and refugee or migration status remain on the margins of queer and refugee movements, policy and support services. The first of its kind in Australia, this conference aims to bring together academics, practitioners and LGBTIQ+ people seeking asylum and refugees to discuss pertinent issues of queer forced displacement and foster dialogue between official and unofficial groups invested in research and practice for coordinated solutions and better support of affected populations. The deadline for proposals is 1 September 2019. |

Volunteering is belonging MMRC’s new program Volunteering is Belonging is about to kick off! The program is for young people between the ages of 16 -25 from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Apart from gaining experience and increasing networks through volunteering, participants will enhance their leadership and employability skills. They will also have the option of completing the accredited Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (with support from MMRC). Places are limited and preference will be given to City of Stirling residents due to the conditions of the grant.

YACtivate - Save the date This year the 2019 YACtivate Planning Committee have opted for a 2-day event hosted in the South West of Western Australia, Siesta Park (15 minutes drive from Busselton). This event will provides an opportunity for the South West Youth Advisory Council's to profile the beautiful south-west, share and network with each other and consolidate relationships. Tickets including accommodation will be $60 per person and the registration process will be announced shortly. The overall capacity for this year's event is smaller than previous years with limited accommodation and we encourage metropolitan and regional Youth Advisory Council's to pool their resources to travel to this event. Get involved with the‘share a meal, share a story’ theme for Refugee Week 2019. Hold a breakfast, morning tea or dinner and hear stories from this year’s Refugee Ambassadors while you share their favourite meals. You can make it an awareness-raising event or support the vital work of the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) by making it a fundraiser.
