January Updates

Since restarting our service in the second week of January, we've facilitated 36 hours of play across 14 sessions, working with at least 70 children.

This month, we've welcomed three new team members, including new Logistics & Operations and Advocacy Coordinators, and a new volunteer - who is a professional footballer!

Nature, Space & Friendship

We started the month exploring the world around us, before jetting into space and travelling the stars with galaxies in jars, and finishing the month with a wonderful week of friendship!

Advocacy Updates

On the 6th February 2014, Spanish border police opened fire on 200 refugees as they attempted to swim from Moroccan and Spanish waters, killing at least 11 people. Since 1993, more than 48,000 people have been killed as a result of 'Fortress Europe' - the network of hostile policies on European borders.

Human lives, not numbers. Nine years on, we joined in 'CommemorAction' - standing in solidarity with all those who have lost their lives, or the lives of friends, family, and loved ones. With all those who are forced to put their lives at risk to exercise their right to seek asylum.

The effects of the severe, large-scale eviction that took place in December continued to be felt this month, whilst freezing temperatures and icy winds made living conditions even more volatile for all those living on the border. Click below to read our observations in full:

With no State-provided waste collection services for those living in informal sites in northern France, we've observed particularly high levels of rubbish in recent weeks. At the end of this month, we participated in a waste collection action, picking up rubbish from informal living sites and helping create a sculpture to highlight the urgency of the situation in Calais.

Until the French and UK governments end their tireless pursuit of violent, hostile policies, people forced to live on the border will continue to be prevented from accessing fundamental rights. Until the UK government creates safe routes for all those who need them, people will continue to be forced to put their lives at risk seeking safety.

With the horrific news of the violent anti-immigration protest in the UK last week, it's more important than ever that we call on our governments for an end to hostile border policies. If you'd like to take action, we've compiled some ideas here:
