Update #6 September 2021

FRIENDS OF BUDDINA

1.  Our Planning & Environment Court challenge: The Beachfront

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!  Decision pending

The issues are complex and we appreciate the in-depth consideration that is being undertaken.  His Honour, Judge Long, told the court in November 2020 that he would take time to review the law and the evidence and deliver his decision at a later date after completing his deliberations.  If you have questions about the legal challenge, our website has more information where you can also access copies of the key documents lodged with the Court:

2.  The Beachfront - proposed development site

The scaffold, also known as "the tower of doom" has been dismantled (29 September).  Multiple rumours abound as to why, nevertheless the view from the beach has improved, at least for now.

Even though the Development Application remains subject to a pending Court decision, in July 2021 the Council issued an approval of the Developers' Operational Works Application (with conditions) for the Beachfront apartment building,

You can view the approval document using this link: click HERE for the link to Council's website to open the document which includes multiple compliance conditions, including Erosion and Sediment Control plans, management of the Acid Sulphate Soil, Lighting restrictions ( Oct-May during turtle season), Monitoring of Subterranean Water Supply (specifically for the Buddina Community Garden) and additional permits.

3. Not everyone uses Social Media

(i)  Stories

For our supporters who prefer not to reference Facebook, we sometimes share articles on that platform which we think are relevant to our beachside community.

  • Sunny Coast is #3 on the list of local government areas with the most properties at risk of climate change hazards, NOW and projected to 2100, as documented in the 2021 Australian Infrastructure Plan earlier this month. Click HERE to read the story in The Brisbane Times.
  • A 20-foot sea wall won’t save Miami – how living structures can help protect the coast and keep the paradise vibe.  We need to listen to the science … not the developers.  The same applies the world over, sea level rise is real and Australia is not exempt. Click HERE to read this article from The Conversation.
  • Reported in the SCD on 10 September: “Jeanette Allom-Hill has confirmed she will seek the region’s highest office when it becomes available, either in 2024 or earlier if persistent rumours of an Olympic Committee job for Mayor Mark Jamieson proved true". Click HERE to read the full article (paywall applies).

4.  Mass Transit

Council Public Consultation

Council's website update on 13 August stated "Once analysed, the survey results will inform the engagement process outcomes report which will inform the final Options Analysis Report, which will be presented to a future council meeting.  We look forward to sharing that information with our community ..."

On 28 September, Council updated this statement to:

The finalised Options Analysis report, which has been informed by the feedback received during the engagement period, is to be considered by council at a Special Meeting to be held on the 20 October 2021.  As of the 29 September 2021, the agenda for the meeting, the updated Options Analysis Report which includes the summary Engagement Report prepared by Articulous can be viewed on council's meetings, minutes and agendas page" To access the Special Meeting documents, click HERE and check the October date, then select the Special Meeting Agenda.  You'll see the report of 785 pages has been divided into 23 separate sub-reports which are all accessible, from the link provided via the summary page of the report.

At the October 20 Special Meeting, Councillors will consider the entire report and decide what steps are to be taken from that point on.

Please note that at any time you can access Council's most recent update on their Mass Transit Community Consultation statements (subject to change); click HERE for the link.

Position Statement - what is Friends of Buddina stance the Mass Transit project?

Our response to the Draft Options Analysis Report is embodied in our Position Statement which reflected that we believed Council's preferred options were the WRONG MODES along the WRONG ROUTE with an unacceptable weighting bias on 'land use' (building height and density increases with multi-storey apartments).  Click HERE to view our full Position Statement which was submitted to Council.  As connected community groups read through and analyse the latest documents released late yesterday, we'll provide updates via our Facebook page and/or our website PRIOR to the Special Meeting scheduled for 20 October 2021.
