Ascension Sunday
Commentary, Luke 24:44-53 | Marissa Coblentz
This Ascension Day Gospel reading opens in the middle of Jesus’ conversation with his disciples after appearing among them. According to 24:37, the disciples were “startled and terrified” by his appearance until he showed them his hands and feet and ate a piece of broiled fish.
Commentary, Acts 1:1-11 | L. Michaels
Luke doesn’t waste any time continuing to tell the narrative of Jesus. Where his gospel leaves off, the book of Acts picks up, just after the resurrection. Throughout Scripture, forty days is a significant measure of time, and as Luke begins to weave the tale of the early church, the last forty days with Jesus in their presence has just run out. The next ten are going to be excruciating.
Commentary, Ephesians 1:15-23 | Eric Verbovszky
At every level, whether local or worldwide, prayer is the church’s heartbeat. Just as working on a healthy heart contributes to a healthy body, devotion to prayer contributes to a healthy church. While Paul does not prescribe how to pray as he opens his letter to the Ephesians, his insight regarding prayer gives the church body, both then and now, challenging words.
Commentary, Psalm 47 | Gregory Crofford
It was just a mound of topsoil. The dump truck arrived and delivered it, pouring it on the back corner of our suburban ¼ acre of land. Little by little, the mound diminished as my father planted flowerbeds around the perimeter of our house. But before the mound was gone, it provided hours of entertainment for my brothers and me who wrestled to be “king of the mountain.”
