It Followed Me Home; What All Motorcyclists Thinking of Towing a Trailer Need to Know My first experience towing a trailer behind a two-wheeler was when as little kids, my brother and I tied a wagon behind my bicycle so we could participate in the children's parade in the little town where I grew up. I don't recall any issues during the parade itself, but a few days after the parade, and while attempting to negotiate the sharp turn in the driveway leading behind the church next to our house, I went into the turn a little hot and despite my best attempts to scrub off some speed, we both ended up in a thorn bush. Fast forward a bunch of years, and I'm still towing a trailer behind my bike. Of course, I now tow a lightweight camping trailer behind a large cruiser, but the lessons I learned as a kid remain with me to this day. So, for those thinking of towing a trailer, but who may have some reservations, hopefully this article will give some insights based on real-world experience. What Kind of Trailer The first thing to consider, is what type of trailer you want to tow and when it comes to trailer availability, the range of trailers that can safely be towed by a motorcycle has increased substantially in recent years. Cargo trailers to give you more carrying capacity are very common and cargo units can be found in both single-wheel, and two-wheel configurations. I've owned a single-wheel trailer for several years using it to carry camping gear for weekend trips including last year for the vintage racing weekend at Mosport. |

The little single-wheel trailer adds a fair bit of extra storage space and in all honesty, it is hardly noticeable behind my cruiser. Being a single wheel, it follows almost exactly in the wheel tracks of the bike itself and any space that the bike can squeeze through, the trailer will follow. In addition to towing the little single-wheeler, I've also towed two-wheel cargo trailers and more recently, even a lightweight Lees-ure Lite camping trailer. I've had no issues at all towing a trailer behind my Yamaha Roadstar but just as when towing a trailer behind a car, there are some important considerations. You Can't Fight Physics In many ways, the things to keep in mind when towing a trailer mirror the same things to keep in mind when caring a passenger. Most machines will have sufficient power to tow the trailer, but extra distance will be required to stop and this is something for which you as the operator must always be prepared. For this reason, it is critical to think a little further down the road to ensure you have sufficient stopping room. No More Lane Splitting for You If you do happen to be towing a trailer in a jurisdiction that allows for lane splitting, you're just going to have to be patient and wait in line with all the cagers. Also, take a little extra care when pulling into gas pumps and other tight spaces as it can be very easy to forget that you need a couple of extra feet of room on each side. If a trailer is something you have been considering, stop in and talk to the gang at oVc. We're happy to discuss your towing needs with you and can show you how easily you can get your own Lees-ure Lite camping trailer in time for summer! |

oVc's Vapour Honing Services oVc is thrilled to let you know that our new Vapour Honing system has arrived and is now set up in the shop. For those who don't know, vapour honing is a very sophisticated form of small particle blasting and is particularly ideal for restoring automotive and motorcycle finishes. Vapour honing makes use of a slurry solution that produces a satin-like finish on even the most pitted of surfaces. Vapour honing is the perfect means of finishing parts with very minute tolerances as it can clean any metalic surface without overheating, warping, or removing material. If you are in the middle of a restoration project, or just want to clean up a set of side cases or other unpainted surface, call Ken to see how vapour honing can make your project look new again! |
