For February, I would like to challenge everyone to think about fostering and opening their home to a dog in need! There are many Catahoula at risk in shelters throughout the South and without a foster home, we cannot save them. On average, the dogs we are rescuing are around a year old and about 40-60lbs. |
If fostering a Catahoula isn’t for you, but you are open to saving a life, remember we are an all-breed rescue and have rescued giant breeds and tiny breeds. We take in dogs of all ages. Approved adopters don’t need to apply, just send Rachel@blackjackrescue.org an email. If you are new to Blackjack Rescue, you’ll need to apply at www.blackjackrescue.org/fostering-appliction I made a plea the other day about a dog in Georgia- we have named him Rocket. We were asked to take him because he came into animal control with a prolapsed penis-which had to be fixed immediately. Thankfully, a group on the ground in Georgia did this at no cost to Blackjack Animal Rescue! I needed to find a foster home for him very quickly- which usually I have more time leading up to a deadline. One of our wonderful fosters stepped up and said they would take him! Rocket has been neutered now and is in boarding, healing and waiting on transport, for which we will have to incur the cost. If you would like to help with Rocket’s care you can donate at PayPal.me/blackjackrescue and make a note it is for Rocket. Foster homes save lives! Help us to continue our mission. There is an unfortunate trend happening right now in the rescue. We currently have two dogs that have been in foster care for over a year and another that is closely approaching! We need your help to find these wonderful dogs their forever homes. Do not let their location deter you from adoption- these are three deserving dogs who can travel to their forever homes. |

AIDEN Everyone has come to love Aiden. He was rescued from Rocky Mount, NC and came to us with Lyme disease. We believe his one eye is blind due to poor genetics or the Lyme disease. |
Lyme disease is a tick borne disease and is typically treated with antibiotics which we did. When we rescued Aiden, he had a heartworm test done and it was negative. Aiden was in a foster home in NC for many months. Aiden was adopted for a very brief moment, but like many Catahoula’s Aiden barked while on a leash going for a walk and the adopter was uncomfortable with his behavior and returned Aiden. We choose to move Aiden to a new foster home in Virginia to get some new exposure and get some one-on-one attention. When Aiden moved to his new foster home everything was going smooth- he transitioned fine and his new foster didn’t notice any behavior problems. However, one day she called, and said “I think Aiden is having seizures!” We brought Aiden to the vet immediately to find out what was going on and how we could help him. Aiden was diagnosed with Focal Seizures. We explored the medication options for Aiden to control his seizures and suddenly they stopped. Aiden has not had another seizure since! We couldn’t be happier. However, while at the vet, they did run a basic blood panel and Aiden came up heartworm positive! This handsome pup hasn’t been able to catch a break. We have begun to treat him for his heartworms. He still needs immiticide injections but he’s almost at the finish line. The good news is that Aiden has handled all the medications well and it hasn’t trigged having the seizures which was a fear. With all that said, Aiden is a great dog. His foster mom is in love with Aiden and he is very friendly with all of the neighbors in her apartment complex. Aiden goes on walks and plays in the neighborhood dog park. He loves to play fetch. He is easy going in the apartment. His foster took him to her parent’s house (and on a very long car trip!) and Aiden enjoyed being in the car, being spoiled by his foster grandparents and meeting new dogs along the way. Aiden has been dealt a raw hand health wise. All we can do is love him and keep him safe. We would love it if Aiden could find his forever home. If you think Aiden could be the Catahoula for you, please Apply: www.blackjackrescue.org If you are an already an approved adopter or have questions about Aiden please email Rachel@Blackjackrescue.org If you would like to donate to Aiden’s immiticide treatment please do so at PayPal.me/blackjackrescue and note it is for Aiden. |

CLAIRE Claire was a dog who we rescued without knowing anything about her, other than the shelter believed she was pregnant and wanted her gone. We were told there was a pregnant Catahoula in danger of dying. Without hesitation, our foster made room for her. |
Claire is from a small town in Mississippi. She was transported to her foster home immediately. When she arrived it was noted that she was definitely more Pit Bull than Catahoula, and not pregnant. Claire went to the vet and the vet confirmed the pregnancy rumors by saying there is no way Claire is pregnant. Claire was spayed a few weeks later. We ran a heartworm test on her at the first appointment and knew the results were going to come back positive. Claire also came to us with scars on her face; she was fearful and would flinch if your hands were near her face. Claire started treatment for heartworms and it was a struggle for her. Multiple times during the treatment we were worried about her as she would cough up blood and throw blood clots. Her foster parents had to take each day and each medicine a step at a time with her. Once she finished her heartworm treatment, Claire felt better and was ready to be a playful Pitbull/Catahoula again. Claire has been in rescue for over a year. Some of that time has been due to her heartworm positive status and needing treatment. However, Claire is a dog who has never received an application. She doesn’t get looked at. This girl is amazing. I would still be cautious of placing Claire in a multiple dog home, but lately Claire has started to initiate play with other dogs in her foster home (under very close supervision). Claire is not aggressive! Claire is afraid of being hurt again. Over the past year her foster family has taught her she is safe and loved. She loves people. She is very treat motivated. She loves to play fetch but it has to be the perfect pittie princess temperature (not too hot, and not too cold). Claire loves to cuddle; she will sit in your lap like she is a tea cup size dog. Claire will make someone a great dog. She is perfect in her imperfection. If you would like to adopt Claire please apply at www.blackjackrescue.org If you have questions please email Rachel@blackjackrescue.org |

MARCY Little Miss Marcy has been overlooked in the Catahoula rescue due to her being a Chihuahua Dachshund Terrier. This sweetheart was rescued in January and moved to her foster home in February with her six, 10-day old puppies. Marcy, as I’ve joked, was a teenage momma dog. She really didn’t know how to raise puppies and wanted to just soak up all the attention for herself. |
Marcy’s pups were sick, and the foster mom was up around the clock caring for young pups that were under a pound that we weren’t sure would make it. Thankfully all the pups survived the horrible upper respiratory infection and have found loving homes. Marcy was spayed, and we found out that she was heartworm positive which we guessed since she was rescued from Louisiana. Our luck in Louisiana is to rescue heartworm positive dogs. Marcy began treatment in her foster home, and then she was transferred to another foster home in the Nashville area as it is cheaper to do heartworm treatment and it was easier on her foster home. Marcy did great during her heartworm treatment. Marcy loved being in Nashville with her foster home, and her foster mom loved Marcy. We believed we had found Marcy a forever home and transported her. When Marcy arrived in that home, Marcy and the people were in love, however the dogs didn’t get along it was hard to get 4 current dogs, and one new dog to mesh. Marcy also wasn’t feeling the best after the long transport and everything was just off. Marcy came back to the rescue and is back in her original foster home. She is a great dog. She loves people. Her favorite activity is falling over and getting a belly rub. Her foster is certain Marcy could maintain that position all day if she had too! Marcy is very smart and always willing to learn when treats are involved. Marcy right now is a little thick around the edges – winter weight! Marcy loves toys and can easily entertain herself. She does burrow like a dachshund in blankets. Marcy does get jealous- she loves all the attention on herself. Marcy does play with other dogs; she would just prefer them as playmates not as siblings. If you would like to adopt Marcy please apply at www.blackjackrescue.org If you have any questions about Marcy please email Rachel@blackjackrescue.org |

By shopping in our Blackjack shop you are directly helping dogs in need, and helping us pay for dogs in our care. We had a week in October, where we had multiple dogs sick, in different foster homes, which meant different vet’s offices were all being used; by supporting us through our shop you are helping us with our bills! I know it doesn’t sound like fun but we couldn’t be more grateful. |
