On my computer desktop is a carousel of photos that rotates and displays 1,000+ photos of dogs and puppies. Some are happy; some look scared or frightened. Many look hungry, their skin missing and their hearts hurting from past abuse. They are a reminder of all the dogs we have helped over the years. We cannot forget because we are reminded in a thousand ways. Yes, I said we. It takes a lot of people to make a successful rescue work. One of the most unselfish acts we can do is foster a dog or puppy. I say unselfish, because often we have to set aside our own wants, likes and dislikes and be taken out of our comfort zone. We give everything we can and keep giving, like a highway. Many dogs will walk down that highway and into their own homes. We are a wayside. One that will always love that dog or puppy. They will always be "ours", even though they go on to be a part of another family. We will always care about what happens to them. Not for a little while, but always. The first 10 dogs we fostered...Boy, that was hard! I didn't want them to ever leave. After that, I really got into the swing of it and I thought about how, if I kept them all, I couldn't help others. Helping others was always something that was in my heart. It is also in the heart of one of our fosters, Brenda Mathes. She picks up strays in her neighborhood, cheerfully shares hundreds of dogs from local shelters on her Facebook page, and is never one to shut her door. When one more pitiful stray shows up, with nowhere else to go, she opens her door and heart to them. Many times I have called on Brenda. Once, I drove up with 10 little dogs that had been abandoned at a groomer. She never said a word and met me in the rain to usher them all inside to warm beds and a big bowl of food. |

Just recently, I had to call on Brenda to help find a place for Honey, a momma dog we rescued from a shelter. Now, we have to rescue her again because the people who adopted her did not do the right thing. They did not give her flea medicine, so her hair on her tail has fallen out. |

They did not treat her with respect, and now she is scared and hurting from past abuse. We never know what all these dogs go through when we find them in the shelter. Occassionally some are returned. We try to find the best home, but people can and will let you down. |

For some people there is no honor, just expediency in getting rid of the dog or puppy that they pledged to care for; the easy way out. However, we don't let them down and Honey is no different. Brenda is the strong link who is working to make sure Honey has what she deserves- a warm bed, plenty of food, necessary vet care, and flea treatment/baths so she can be parasite-free. For Brenda, her heart is always open to helping another dog find a home. One that didn't have a chance. She took a chance on Buddy, on Joey, and so many others. Now she is helping Honey. Thank you Brenda! She exemplifies that spirit of loving the creatures that depend on us for so much. If anyone wants to donate to Honey's ongoing expense for vet care and for bath treatments for missing hair on her tail, you can Paypal from the web site. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. We can and will get Honey back to herself and into the right, loving home! Thank you again to our supporters, without whom none of this would be possible. Thank you to our fosters and all our volunteers. I know time is precious. Thank you for joining me on this worthwhile endeavor. This is the time for all of us to do our part with the love that flows from our hearts. Sharon Bryant 24/7 dog lover & Director of Blackjack Animal Rescue |

We were lucky enough to be able to update our website. This has been a major update! It has allowed us a better format, ease of use and amazingly more foster offers and applications.
We did this with the help of our new volunteer IT/Graphic designer, Brian, who is helping us with so many projects!

We are currently working on our new 2018 Calendar; “Some things fill your hearts without trying". This calendar will be filled with pictures of our adopted pups living life in their forever home, or in some cases them still in foster homes, living life free from the shelter. By ordering one of our calendars, you will be supporting our mission of saving dogs in need and you will get a wonderful calendar in return. |

“Unleash Your Inner Houla” t-shirts and hoodies are still available! We just received a shipment of Port & Company Ladies Core Cotton V-Neck Tees, side seamed with a contoured body for a feminine fit. They come in an array of colors. If you have not ordered one of these shirts don't miss your opportunity! This was cleverly designed by our own team and with your support we can continue to save lives. It is truly a win-win for all Catahoula lovers. |
