SPECIAL FEATURE Echoes talks with artist JULIA EVERETT I’m constantly searching for anything related to Gene Clark that could be of interest and recently came across a painting by artist Julia Everett titled Clouds and Dreams on Instagram. Intrigued by what inspired her to title a painting from one of Gene’s lyrics, I decided to contact her to find out the story and share it with Echoes’ readers. Here's our interview, I hope you enjoy it! |

Contemporary London-based artist JULIA EVERETT paints wonderfully vibrant abstract sunsets and calm ethereal abstract seascapes inspired by music and titled from song lyrics. Her vivid oil-on-canvas paintings, capturing water, landscape, light and pure colour celebrate her love for nature. Julia graduated in Fine Art at Brighton University and has successfully exhibited in Britain, Europe and America and many of her paintings are in private collections around the world. Her latest series of abstract sunsets are inspired by the light, colour and reflections on the ocean, both in Cornwall and California. Julia always listens to music when working and feels that the music influences what she paints. She has recently been listening to country, rock and folk music and she has chosen song lyrics from Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Gene Clark, Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and David Bowie amongst others to title her paintings. When did you start painting? I have always loved painting, even as a child I knew I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. My school reports read that I had very little interest in any other subject, so I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I have always wanted to. I have always loved the sea and I went to college in Brighton to do my BA in Fine Art, where my love of the ocean grew and I am endlessly fascinated by the horizon. Since 2001 I’ve had several different studios in West London and now paint near the Thames in Hammersmith. How does music in general inspire your art? Is it during the process of creating the art itself or is it before you begin working on a piece? I always listen to music when painting and feel that this has a strong influence on the finished work. I find particular albums mesmerizing, like Gene Clark’s No Other and Roadmaster and they put me in the zone for painting. I get carried along by the music as I work. I paint from memory, not life and think of a time or a place and use it as a starting point. The music I listen to when painting adds to the mood and becomes interlinked with the feel of the artwork. Lyrics often jump out at me when I'm working and seem to fit the artwork perfectly, I feel that a snippet of a song lyric as a title gives the painting extra depth. When did you discover Gene Clark's music? I’ve always been a massive fan of 60s and 70’s music and I’ve loved The Byrds since I was a teenager and this was where I discovered Gene Clark. When I first met my boyfriend John in 1995 he made me a Gene Clark mix tape as he is a massive fan and I loved it! His band The Snakes have done an amazing cover of "The French Girl", which they discovered through Gene Clark’s version. You can listen to it on YouTube here. What moods are evoked for you by Gene's music? I find Gene’s music very moving and romantic, with a tragic edge. His lyrics are so evocative of nature and beauty that they really inspire me and remind me of the ocean. Many of his lyrics refer to the sun, sunsets and the sea and they conjure up tranquil images to me. I also like the bittersweet sadness and melancholy that I feel in his music. How many pieces do you have which are inspired by Gene? Here’s my top 10 Paintings titled from Gene Clark Lyrics: Clouds and Dreams from “Only Colombe”, Out on the Horizon from “Somewhere After Midnight”, Illuminate the Night from “Long Time”, Shades of Evening from “Day for Night”, Evening Sun from “Kansas City Southern”, Towards the Sun from “Shooting Star”, In a Misty Morning from “In a Misty Morning”, Wonder in the Night from “She’s the Kind of Girl”, Silver on the Ocean from “Lady of the North” and The Sea Beyond the Stars from “Silver Raven”. |

You mentioned to me that you had been to Mendocino, a place which Gene loved and where he wrote his most introspective songs (White Light & No Other LPs). What were your impressions of Mendocino and how do you think nature inspires your art and Gene's music? Recently John and I went on a road trip in California and stayed in Mendocino, because of our love of Gene Clark. I was blown away by how beautiful the coastline was and found it incredibly inspirational. I remember standing on the headland on the coast at Mendocino and watching the waves, they were twisting like a whirlpool and the patterns in the surf were really beautiful and otherworldly. It was a very special moment that I’ll never forget. It’s easy to see why Gene chose to live nearby and why he was inspired by this environment. It’s a magical place where the power of nature puts trivial things into perspective. For me the rugged North California coast makes me introspective and thoughtful and I hope to capture that sense of wonder in my paintings. |

BARRY MCGUIRE has had a long career as a singer-songwriter, writing and performing many well known songs such as “Green, Green” with New Christy Minstrels founder Randy Sparks. In 1963, while touring with The New Christy Minstrels in Kansas City MO, Gene Clark was discovered while singing with the Surf Riders in Castaways and he was asked to join the NCM on the spot. The young 18-year-old Gene immediately left home and stayed with them until 1964 until a certain Fab Foursome came along and he left to pursue something new. Barry also left in January 1965 to pursue his own solo career and found success with his most well known record, P.F. Sloan's “Eve of Destruction”. Barry can be seen in the documentary The Byrd Who Flew Alone: The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark discussing his early recollections of Gene (you can see a clip from the documentary here.). In 2008, Barry toured with former Byrd John York. He continues to make live appearances to this day. (Visit Barry McGuire's website here.) |

1. When was the first time you met Gene? I first met Gene in Kansas City when we heard him singing in a folk group…I forget the name of the group but I remember the song they were singing, “We’ll run the ridges of our green land Tennessee and we’ll hide for 40 years if that’s what’s meant to be.” How incredible that I only heard that song once nearly 50 years ago and still remember that line. We invited Gene to join the New Christy Minstrels. |

2. What is your favorite Gene Clark story/memory? Last time I talked with Gene was October, 1965. He lived right across the street from me, and somehow we wound up sitting on a hill in Laurel Canyon. He was about to fly off to Hawaii for a Byrd’s concert and I was on my way to England. I remember how we were so amazed that in 24 hours, he’d be in Hawaii and I’d be in England, yet there we were sitting on a hill in Laurel Canyon, smoking a joint, bathing in the warm California sun. 3. What do you know about Gene that you would want his fans to know? I really didn’t know Gene well enough to share any insights to his deep personal question marks but just looking from the outside in, I felt he was a very driven man and as talented as he was, he never realized it. 4. Favorite Gene Clark Song/Album? It’s funny, but I’ve never really listened to anyone’s music including my own, oh yes, I’ve heard songs on the radio and some of them I’ve actually recorded, but I never knew who wrote the songs, and usually didn’t know who was singing them. I had no idea that George Harrison wrote so many of the Beatle hits, just as I have no idea how many songs the Byrd’s recorded that had been written by Gene, so no, I really don’t have a favorite song of his. 5. Complete the sentence: I think Gene Clark should be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame because... because….why should anybody be voted into anything? **(View the clip below of Barry McGuire talking about Gene from the documentary The Byrd Who Flew Alone, The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark availble from Four Suns Productions.) |
